If you're wondering how to connect Instagram to a scheduler, it comes down to three things: your Instagram account must be a professional (Business or Creator) account, it must be linked to a Facebook Page, and you then connect it from the scheduler by logging in through Meta and approving its permissions. In Schedule For You, that last step happens on the Accounts screen and takes a couple of minutes.

Below are the full steps, including how to switch account types and link a Page if you haven't done that yet, what you can schedule once you're connected, and what to do if something goes wrong.

## What you need before you connect

| Requirement | Why it's needed |
|---|---|
| Instagram Business or Creator account | Meta only gives publishing access to professional accounts |
| A Facebook Page linked to that account | The connection runs through the Page |
| Full control of the Page | Needed to grant publishing permissions |
| The Facebook login that manages the Page | Meta's window only lists Pages that login can manage |
| A Schedule For You account | Start a [7-day free trial](https://scheduleforyou.com/signup) if you don't have one |

The trial requires a card, and you aren't charged until day 8. You can cancel any time before then.

## Step 1: Switch Instagram to a professional account

If your account is already Business or Creator, skip ahead. If not, switching is free and you keep your posts and followers.

1. Open the Instagram app and go to your profile.
2. Open the menu and go to **Settings and activity**.
3. Look for **Account type and tools** (menu names change from time to time).
4. Tap **Switch to professional account**.
5. Choose a category that describes you or your business.
6. Choose **Creator** or **Business** and finish the setup.

### Business or Creator: which should you pick?

Both work for scheduling. Business accounts suit companies, shops and services, and offer options like contact buttons. Creator accounts suit individuals such as artists, coaches and influencers. If you're unsure, pick the one that matches how you present yourself; you can switch between them later.

## Step 2: Link Instagram to a Facebook Page

Your professional account must be linked to a Facebook Page. If you don't have a Page, create one on Facebook first. It can be simple: a name, a profile picture and a category are enough.

To link them, use one of these routes:

- **From Instagram:** go to Edit profile and look for the Page option under your public business information, then connect an existing Page or create one.
- **From Facebook:** open the Page, go to its settings and look for **Linked accounts** or **Instagram**, then connect your account.
- **From Meta Business Suite:** if the Page is in a business portfolio, add the Instagram account in the portfolio's settings.

Once linked, the Page and the Instagram account should each show the other in their settings.

### Check your Page access

The Facebook account you'll connect with needs full control of the Page (the equivalent of the old admin role). Partial or task-only access isn't enough to grant publishing permissions. Our guide on [connecting a Facebook Page](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/connect-facebook-page) explains how to check your access level.

## Step 3: Connect Instagram to Schedule For You

1. **Sign in** and open the workspace you want to use. Each workspace has its own connected accounts.
2. **Go to the Accounts screen.**
3. **Choose Instagram.** A Meta window opens.
4. **Log in with Facebook**, using the account that has full control of the linked Page. If you're already logged in, confirm it's the right one.
5. **Select the Page and Instagram account.** Meta asks which Pages and Instagram accounts to share. Tick the ones you need.
6. **Approve the permissions.** Leave every requested permission on. They cover things like publishing content to your account, and switching any off can stop posts from going out.
7. **Choose the account to add.** Back in Schedule For You, select your Instagram account and confirm.

Your account now appears on the Accounts screen and in the composer. It counts as one of your connected accounts: 15 on Solo, 100 on Studio. Managing several brands? See [how to connect multiple Instagram accounts](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/connect-multiple-instagram-accounts).

## What you can schedule once Instagram is connected

Knowing what's supported saves you from failed posts later.

| What you attach | What gets published |
|---|---|
| One image | A feed photo post |
| One video | A Reel |
| 2 to 10 images or videos (mixed is fine) | A carousel |
| No media | Not possible: Instagram needs an image or video |

Captions can be up to 2,200 characters, and the composer checks the limit live. You can write an Instagram-specific version of a caption while the same post goes to other platforms with their own versions.

### What isn't supported

- **Story stickers and music.** Stories go out as the one image or video you upload, with no caption, so polls, link stickers and Instagram's music library aren't available.
- **Automatic cropping.** Images aren't cropped or resized, so they must already sit between 4:5 portrait and 1.91:1 landscape (Instagram's feed range at the time of writing). The [Instagram photo resizer](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/instagram-photo-resizer) has presets for each shape.

### Your first scheduled post

Open the composer, select your Instagram account, attach your media and write the caption. Then pick a date and time or add the post to your queue, which publishes it in your next free posting time slot. You can see everything on the drag-and-drop calendar and move posts around as plans change.

## Troubleshooting the connection

### Instagram doesn't appear in Meta's window

Almost always, the account is still personal or isn't linked to a Page. Check both in the Instagram app, fix whichever is missing, and start the connection again.

### The Page is missing from the list

You may have left it unticked in an earlier connection. Run the connection again, choose the option to edit your previous settings in Meta's dialog, and select the Page. Also make sure you're logged in to the Facebook account that manages it; a private browser window helps if your browser keeps choosing another login.

### You see a permissions error

Either a permission was switched off during setup, or your Page access isn't full control. Reconnect and approve everything, or ask a Page admin to upgrade your access.

### Posts were working and then stopped

Meta can cancel a connection after a password change, a security check or a change to the account type or Page link. You'll get a failed-post alert with a prompt to reconnect. Reconnect from the Accounts screen, then retry the failed posts. Our guide to [Instagram failing to post](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/instagram-not-posting) covers other causes, such as image shapes and video processing.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I connect a personal Instagram account to a scheduler?

No. Meta only allows scheduling tools to publish to Business or Creator accounts linked to a Facebook Page. Switching to a professional account is free and keeps your posts and followers.

### Can I schedule Instagram posts without a Facebook Page?

Not with Schedule For You. The Instagram account must be linked to a Facebook Page, because that's how Meta grants a scheduler permission to publish.

### Does connecting Instagram give the scheduler my password?

No. You log in through Meta's own window, and Meta gives the app a token with the permissions you approve. Your password isn't shared with the scheduler.

### Can I schedule Instagram Stories after connecting?

Yes. Set "Post as" to Story in the composer and attach one image or video (9:16, no caption). Feed photo posts, Reels and carousels work the same way, and you can add a first comment to feed posts and Reels. Our guide to [scheduling Instagram Stories](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/schedule-instagram-and-facebook-stories) covers the details.

### How long does it take to connect Instagram?

If your account is already professional and linked to a Page, a couple of minutes. Switching account type and linking a Page adds a few more minutes the first time.
