A good Discord bio tells people who you are, what you're into, and how to reach you, all within the About Me limit of 190 characters. Keep it short, put the most useful detail first, and use Discord's markdown (like **bold** and *italics*) sparingly to make it easy to scan.

Below you'll find the rules, a simple formula, formatting tricks, and copy-ready examples you can adapt.

## Discord profile limits at a glance

Your bio is only one part of your profile. These are the limits that matter when you set it up, at the time of writing.

| Profile field | Limit |
| --- | --- |
| About Me (bio) | 190 characters |
| Display name | 32 characters |
| Username | 2–32 characters, lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods |
| Custom status | 128 characters |
| Profile banner | 680×240 recommended (banners require Nitro) |
| Avatar | Square image, shown as a circle |

The 190-character limit includes everything you type: spaces, emoji, and the symbols you use for formatting. Two asterisks on each side of a bold word add four characters to your count.

## How to edit your Discord bio

1. Open Discord and click the gear icon (**User Settings**) near your username.
2. Go to the profile section. It's usually labeled **Profiles**, though Discord renames settings from time to time.
3. Find the **About Me** box and type or paste your bio.
4. Check the preview on the right to see how it looks.
5. Click **Save Changes**.

In the mobile app, tap your avatar, then **Edit Profile**, and look for **About Me**.

Nitro subscribers can also set server profiles, which let you show a different avatar, banner and other profile details in specific servers. That's handy if you're a moderator in one community and just a member in another.

## What makes a good Discord bio

### Lead with the most useful detail

People usually glance at your profile because you said something in a channel or joined a voice call. Answer the question they're probably asking: who is this, and why are they here? "Community manager at a small indie studio" tells people far more than a vague quote.

### Say how you want to be contacted

Discord is a chat platform, so your bio is the natural place to set expectations. "DMs open for collabs" or "Ask questions in #help, not DMs" saves you a lot of awkward messages.

### Add a personal touch

One or two interests, a running joke, or your time zone makes your profile feel human. Pronouns can go in your bio, though Discord also has a separate pronouns field, which keeps your About Me free for other things.

### Keep it current

An outdated bio ("streaming every Friday!" from two years ago) is worse than a short one. Update it when your role, schedule or availability changes.

## Formatting your bio with markdown

Discord's About Me supports the same basic markdown as messages. Use it to highlight one or two things, not everything.

| You type | You get |
| --- | --- |
| `**bold**` | **bold** |
| `*italic*` | *italic* |
| `__underline__` | underlined text |
| `~~strikethrough~~` | ~~strikethrough~~ |
| `` `code` `` | `code` in a monospace box |
| `\|\|spoiler\|\|` | Text hidden until clicked |

A few tips:

- **Line breaks work.** Press Enter (or Shift + Enter on desktop) to start a new line. Short lines are easier to read than one long sentence.
- **Links are clickable.** Paste a full URL to a portfolio or website. Avoid links that look like spam or ask people to log in somewhere.
- **Emoji work too.** Standard emoji are fine for everyone. Custom server emoji in your bio generally require Nitro.
- **Watch your count.** Formatting symbols use up characters. Our [Discord character counter](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/discord-character-counter) shows the About Me limit alongside message and status limits, so you can check before saving.

### Using fancy fonts

You can paste styled text, such as 𝓼𝓬𝓻𝓲𝓹𝓽 or 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝗻𝘀, from a tool like our [Discord font generator](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/discord-font-generator). These aren't real fonts. They're look-alike Unicode characters, so they work anywhere Discord accepts text. Use them as an accent rather than for your whole bio: screen readers may read them letter by letter or skip them, and people can't search for them easily.

## Discord bio examples you can copy

Each example below is under 190 characters, including formatting symbols. Copy one and swap in your own details. The text in each box is exactly what you'd paste into the About Me field.

### For gamers

- `Ranked support main | Diamond in two games, Silver in patience. LFG most evenings after 8 p.m. ET. Ping me in #voice-chat, not my DMs.` (134 characters)
- `Tabletop GM since 2015. Running two campaigns, one villain I'm far too proud of. Scheduling happens in #session-planning, not DMs.` (130 characters)

### For artists and creators

- `Night-shift illustrator. I draw dragons, cozy rooms and too many cats. Commissions open on weekends. **he/him** · UTC+1 · DMs open for collabs, not for NFTs.` (157 characters)
- `she/they ✦ lofi, film photos, overthinking ✦ ||ask me about my zine||` (69 characters)

### For developers and designers

- `*Currently:* learning Rust, breaking things, fixing them again.` (63 characters)
- `Product designer by day, synth noodler by night. Running the Thursday feedback circle. Say hi in #introductions.` (112 characters)

### For moderators and community managers

- `Community manager at a small indie studio. Bug reports go to #bug-reports so the team sees them. Everything else, my DMs are open.` (130 characters)
- `Mod for a plant-swap server. Ask me about tomatoes, compost, or why your basil died. Server rules are pinned in #start-here.` (124 characters)

Notice the pattern: who you are, one or two personal details, and how to reach you. That three-part formula works for almost any profile.

## Need more ideas?

If you're stuck, our [Discord bio generator](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/discord-bio-generator) gives you a dozen bios at a time. Describe who you are, choose a tone such as friendly, funny or minimal, and every suggestion comes with a character count so you know it fits. Edit the one you like best so it sounds like you.

### Ideas by vibe

- **Minimal:** your role, one interest, your time zone. Nothing else.
- **Funny:** a self-aware line about your main game, your sleep schedule or your snack habits.
- **Professional:** what you do, what you help with in this server, and where to ask for help.
- **Aesthetic:** a few lowercase words separated by symbols like ✦ or ·, plus one spoiler for curious visitors.

## What to avoid

- **Personal information.** Don't include your full name, school, address, phone number or anything that makes you easy to find offline.
- **Walls of emoji or symbols.** They're hard to read and eat into your 190 characters.
- **Anything that breaks Discord's rules.** Bios are covered by Discord's Community Guidelines just like messages. Offensive or impersonating content can get your profile reported.
- **Ads and spam links.** A portfolio link is fine. A string of promo codes looks like a bot.

Discord is where many communities hang out, but it's usually not where they're found. If you also promote your server or creative work on other social networks, Schedule For You can help you plan and queue those posts. It doesn't post to Discord itself.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long can a Discord bio be?

The About Me section allows up to 190 characters at the time of writing. That includes spaces, emoji and any markdown symbols you use, such as the asterisks around bold text.

### Can I use bold and italics in my Discord bio?

Yes. The About Me field supports Discord markdown, including `**bold**`, `*italic*`, `__underline__`, `~~strikethrough~~`, inline `code` and `||spoilers||`. Check the preview in your profile settings before you save.

### Do I need Nitro to have a Discord bio?

No. Every account can add an About Me. Nitro adds extras such as a custom profile banner, server-specific profiles, and using custom emoji from other servers in your profile.

### Can I put links in my Discord bio?

Yes. Paste a full URL and it becomes clickable. Keep links to trustworthy pages like your portfolio or website, and never share links that ask people to log in or download files.

### Why do fancy fonts look like boxes on some devices?

Styled text uses special Unicode characters. If a device or font is missing those characters, they show up as empty boxes or question marks. Stick to common styles like bold or italic, and use them for a few words rather than your whole bio.
