Yes, Bluesky uses hashtags. Type `#` followed by a word in a post and it becomes a clickable tag; tapping it shows recent and top posts with that tag, and you can search for tags too. Hashtags matter more on Bluesky than on X or Threads in one specific way: many **custom feeds** are built around hashtags, so the right tag can put your post in front of everyone who subscribes to that feed. One or two relevant tags work best.

## How hashtags work on Bluesky

- **Clickable.** Any `#word` in a post links to a tag page. Tags can include letters, numbers and underscores, but not spaces or punctuation.
- **Searchable.** Searching `#photography` returns posts with that tag. You can switch between Top and Latest.
- **Count toward 300 characters.** The `#` and the word count in full against the [Bluesky character limit](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/bluesky-character-limit).
- **Mutable.** People can add tags to their muted words to hide them, so a tag can also keep you out of some feeds.
- **Case doesn't matter** for search, but CamelCase (`#BookSky`) is easier to read and better for screen readers.

## Do hashtags matter on Bluesky?

They help in three ways, and don't in one.

| Where | Do hashtags help? |
| --- | --- |
| Custom feeds built on tags (art, science, books, news) | Yes, the biggest effect |
| Search and tag pages | Yes, people browse popular tags |
| Following feed | No, it's chronological; your followers see you either way |
| Discover feed | A little; topic matters more than the tag itself |

Bluesky has no single algorithm that rewards hashtags. Its reach comes from feeds, reposts and replies. A post tagged `#ScienceSky` might show up in a science feed with tens of thousands of subscribers; the same post with ten generic tags looks like spam and gets muted.

## Do hashtags work the same as on X?

Mostly. The syntax is the same and tags link to a search page. The difference is community-run feeds: on Bluesky, communities agree on tags (such as `#ArtistsOnBluesky`, `#BookSky`, `#SciSky` or `#Photography`) and feed builders collect them. Check a feed's description, since many say which tags they include and some require a tag to appear at all.

## How many hashtags to use

- **One or two** relevant tags is the norm. Three is fine for art and photography, where feeds rely on them.
- **Put them at the end** of the post, or work one into the sentence.
- **Use the community's tag**, not a made-up one. Search the tag first to see if people use it.
- **Skip trending tags** that have nothing to do with your post; people mute them and report off-topic tagging.

## Finding the right hashtags

1. Search a topic in Bluesky and look at the tags on top posts.
2. Browse **Feeds** for your field and read how each one collects posts.
3. Look at the posts of accounts you admire in your niche.
4. Keep a short list of three to five tags you rotate.

## Using the same hashtags on X, Threads and Bluesky

Tags don't always translate. Threads allows one topic tag per post, X users often skip tags, and Bluesky feeds depend on them. If you cross-post, tailor each version. Schedule For You lets you write once and adjust the Bluesky version, tags included, without touching the X or Threads copy, and links, mentions and hashtags in Bluesky posts are published as clickable.
