Category: TikTok.

TikTok Stories last **24 hours**. Once you post a Story, it stays visible on your profile and in your followers' feeds for one day, then disappears from public view automatically. You can delete it sooner, and at the time of writing TikTok also lets you keep Stories on your profile for longer by adding them to **Highlights**. If you want a copy of the video itself, save it to your phone before the 24 hours are up.

Below: how long each clip can be, who sees your Stories, how to check viewers, how to save a Story and how it compares with Instagram.

## TikTok Stories at a glance

| Question | Answer at the time of writing |
| --- | --- |
| How long does a Story stay up? | 24 hours from when you post it |
| Can you keep it longer? | Yes, by adding it to a Highlight on your profile (where available) |
| How long can each clip be? | Early versions capped clips at 15 seconds; check the Story camera for your current limit |
| Format | Vertical photos or videos, 9:16 |
| Who can see it? | Depends on your account privacy and the audience you pick for the Story |
| Can you see who viewed it? | You can see views on your own live Story; viewers aren't anonymous |
| Can you schedule it? | Not from third-party scheduling tools; post Stories in the TikTok app |

TikTok updates its app often, and features can roll out to some accounts or regions before others. If something in this guide doesn't match your app, check TikTok's [Help Center](https://support.tiktok.com) for the current wording.

## How long are TikTok Stories?

### How long a Story stays live: 24 hours

Every Story has a 24-hour lifespan, counted from the moment it's posted. TikTok has used the same window since it first tested Stories; [TechCrunch reported in 2022](https://techcrunch.com/2022/03/17/tiktok-stories-expanded-pilot-feature/) that Stories "last for 24 hours" during the expanded pilot. If you post several Stories in one day, each one runs on its own clock, so the first one you posted disappears first.

You can't extend the timer on a live Story. To keep it visible, add it to a Highlight, post it again as a new Story, or publish it as a regular TikTok video.

### How long each Story clip can be

TikTok launched Stories with clips of up to 15 seconds, and many guides still quote that limit. Some 2026 guides report longer Story clips, and TikTok doesn't put one clear number in front of everyone, so the reliable way to check is the **Story** option in the TikTok camera: it shows the recording lengths available on your account. If a clip is longer than your limit, trim it or split it into several Stories.

For a vertical Story that fills the screen, use 1080×1920 pixels (9:16). Our guide to [TikTok video size and ratio](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/tiktok-video-size-ratio) covers safe zones and export settings, and the [TikTok photo resizer](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/tiktok-photo-resizer) can turn a photo into the right shape in your browser.

## What happens when a TikTok Story expires

After 24 hours, the Story is no longer visible to other people. It isn't simply gone from your account, though:

- **Highlights.** At the time of writing, TikTok's Help Center describes Story Highlights, which let you pick older Stories from your Story archive and keep them on your profile beyond 24 hours. Highlights follow the visibility setting of the original Story.
- **The archive.** Expired Stories are kept privately for you, which is where Highlights draw from. Where it sits in the menus can vary by app version, so if you can't find it, start the Highlight flow from your profile and you'll be offered your past Stories.
- **Deleted Stories are different.** If you delete a Story yourself, don't count on getting it back. Add it to a Highlight or save the video first.

## Do TikTok Stories still exist? Where to find them

Yes. TikTok has reshaped Stories several times since its 2021 test, but at the time of writing Stories are still part of the app.

### How to post a TikTok Story

1. Tap the **+** button at the bottom of the screen.
2. Choose **Story** from the options at the bottom of the camera.
3. Record a video, take a photo, or upload one from your phone.
4. Add text, stickers, sounds or effects if you want.
5. Check the audience setting, then tap the button to post to your Story.

### Where to watch Stories

- **On a profile.** An account with an active Story shows a colored ring around its profile picture. Tap the picture to watch.
- **In your feeds.** Stories from accounts you follow can appear in the For You and Following feeds, usually marked as a Story.
- **In your inbox.** Depending on your app version, Stories from people you follow may also show at the top of your inbox.

## Who can see your TikTok Story?

Who sees a Story depends on two things: whether your account is public or private, and the audience you choose when you post.

- **Public accounts.** A Story can be shown to your followers and may also appear to other people in their feeds, depending on the audience setting you pick for that Story.
- **Private accounts.** Only followers you've approved can see your Stories.
- **Per-Story settings.** When you post, you can limit who can see the Story and whether people can comment. If you're sharing something personal, check this every time rather than relying on your last choice.

One thing that surprises people: watching a Story isn't anonymous. TikTok's Help Center notes that people can see that you viewed their Story even if your account is private or you've turned off profile view history. Third-party "anonymous Story viewer" sites aren't TikTok services, and they're worth avoiding.

## How to see who viewed your TikTok Story

1. Go to your **profile** and tap your profile picture while your Story is live.
2. Look at the bottom of the screen for the view count.
3. Tap it to see the list of viewers, along with any comments or reactions.

Early test versions showed only a view count, not names, as [TechCrunch noted at the time](https://techcrunch.com/2022/03/17/tiktok-stories-expanded-pilot-feature/). If you only see a number, your app version or region may differ. Check the list while the Story is live; don't expect it to stay available after it expires.

Unlike Instagram, comments on a TikTok Story can be public. Direct message replies land in your inbox, and your message settings control who can send them.

## How to save or download your TikTok Story before it expires

### Save the video to your phone

1. Open your Story from your profile.
2. Tap the **…** (more) or share button.
3. Choose **Save video** (sometimes labeled **Download**).

The file goes to your phone's camera roll, so you have a copy you control.

### Keep the original file

If you edited the video outside TikTok, keep the original: it's higher quality than a re-download. If you edit inside TikTok, save a copy before posting. Our guide on [how to see TikTok drafts](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/how-to-see-tiktok-drafts) explains why drafts live on your phone and how to back them up.

### Add it to a Highlight

If the goal is to keep the Story visible on your profile rather than to own a file, add it to a Highlight. That's useful for FAQs, product demos and event recaps. A Story that did well can also be re-uploaded as a regular TikTok video with a full caption.

## TikTok Stories vs Instagram Stories

| Feature | TikTok Stories | Instagram Stories |
| --- | --- | --- |
| How long they stay up | 24 hours | 24 hours |
| Keep them longer | Highlights, where available | Highlights on your profile |
| Clip length | 15 seconds when launched; check the Story camera for your limit | Up to 60 seconds per Story video; longer clips are split |
| Where people find them | Profile ring, For You and Following feeds, inbox | Story bar at the top of the feed, profile ring |
| Comments | Can be public, and can be turned off per Story | Replies go to private messages |
| Viewer list | Shown on your own live Story | Shown to you for a limited time after posting |
| Schedule with Meta or TikTok tools | Post in the TikTok app | Meta Business Suite can schedule Stories for professional accounts |

The biggest practical difference is where Stories appear: Instagram's sit in the Story bar for followers, while TikTok can show Stories inside its main feeds.

If you also post Stories to Instagram and Facebook, our guide on [how to schedule Instagram and Facebook Stories](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/schedule-instagram-and-facebook-stories) walks through Meta Business Suite.

## Can you schedule TikTok Stories?

Not with third-party schedulers, at the time of writing. TikTok Stories are posted in the TikTok app.

Schedule For You doesn't post TikTok Stories. It publishes regular TikTok **videos** and **photo posts** (up to 35 images) to TikTok, with a privacy setting for each post, from the same queue and calendar as your Instagram, YouTube and other channels. A common setup is to schedule your main TikTok videos ahead of time and post quick, behind-the-scenes Stories in the app on the day. If you're working out when those main posts should go out, see our guide to the [best time to post on TikTok](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/best-time-to-post-on-tiktok), or read more about the [TikTok scheduler](https://scheduleforyou.com/tiktok).

## Frequently asked questions

### How long do TikTok Stories last?

24 hours from the moment you post them. After that, they disappear from your profile and feeds. You can keep a Story on your profile longer by adding it to a Highlight, where that feature is available.

### How long are TikTok Stories allowed to be?

TikTok launched Stories with clips of up to 15 seconds. The limit has been reported differently since, so open the Story option in the TikTok camera to see the lengths available on your account. Longer videos need to be trimmed or split into several Stories.

### Can people see that I viewed their TikTok Story?

Yes. Viewing a Story isn't anonymous. TikTok's Help Center says people can see that you viewed their Story even if your account is private or you've turned off profile view history.

### Can I get back a TikTok Story after 24 hours?

Expired Stories are kept privately for you, and you can add them to a Highlight to show them on your profile again. A Story you deleted yourself may not be recoverable, so save the video or add it to a Highlight before deleting.

### Does Schedule For You post TikTok Stories?

No. It schedules TikTok videos and photo posts. Post Stories directly in the TikTok app.
