Category: Instagram.

When you unarchive an Instagram post, it returns to its original place on your profile, by its original date, and at the time of writing Instagram doesn't send your followers a new notification about it. Tagged people are less clear-cut: Instagram doesn't document sending a fresh tag notification on unarchive, and it isn't generally reported to do so, but the behavior isn't officially guaranteed and could change.

Archiving is one of Instagram's most useful and least understood features. Below is how to archive and unarchive posts, where to find the Archive, what other people see, and how the Stories archive differs.

## Quick answer: what happens when you archive or unarchive

| Question | Archive | Unarchive |
|---|---|---|
| Is the post deleted? | No, it's hidden and kept | It comes back with likes and comments |
| Who can see it? | Only you | Everyone who could see it before |
| Where does it appear? | In your Archive | In its original spot on your grid, by original date |
| Do followers get notified? | No | No new notification at the time of writing |
| Do tagged people get notified? | No | Not documented by Instagram; not generally reported, but not guaranteed |
| Does it show up in the feed as new? | No | It's not re-published as a new post |

## How to archive a post

You can archive feed posts, carousels and Reels. The steps are the same in the iPhone and Android apps.

1. Go to your profile and open the post you want to hide.
2. Tap the three-dot menu at the top of the post (on Reels, it may be at the bottom right).
3. Tap **Archive**.

The post disappears from your profile and from everyone else's view right away. Likes, comments, captions and tags are all kept with it.

### Archive several posts at once

Recent versions of the app let you archive posts in bulk:

1. Go to your profile, tap the menu icon, and open **Your activity**.
2. Find the section for the content you've shared, such as posts or Reels.
3. Tap **Select**, choose the posts, and tap **Archive**.

Menu names move between versions. If you don't see bulk options, archive posts one at a time from the post itself.

## Where to find your Archive

1. Go to your profile.
2. Tap the menu icon (three lines) in the top corner.
3. Tap **Archive**.
4. At the top of the Archive screen, use the dropdown to switch between **Posts**, **Stories** and, where available, **Live** archives.

Only you can see this area. Archived posts keep their original dates, so they're sorted the way they were on your grid.

## How to unarchive a post

1. Open your Archive and switch to **Posts**.
2. Tap the post you want to bring back.
3. Tap the three-dot menu.
4. Tap **Show on profile**.

The post goes back to where it was, based on its original posting date. It doesn't jump to the top of your grid, and it doesn't appear in followers' feeds as a new upload.

## What followers and tagged people see

### Followers

While a post is archived, followers can't see it on your profile, in their feed, or through a saved link. If someone had saved it to a Collection, it won't be visible to them while it's archived.

When you unarchive, the post simply reappears on your profile. At the time of writing, Instagram doesn't send followers a notification or push it back into their feeds as fresh content. Anyone scrolling your grid will notice it if they look, especially if they remember it was gone.

### Tagged people

This is the part people worry about most, usually because they archived an old post with an ex, a former colleague or a client.

- **When you archive**, the post is hidden from everyone but you, so it shouldn't appear for the people tagged in it while it's archived, including on the Tagged tab of their profile.
- **When you unarchive**, Instagram doesn't document sending a new tag notification. It isn't commonly reported to do so, but Instagram hasn't said so officially, and app behavior changes over time.

If staying quiet matters, the safest option is to remove the tag before you unarchive. Open the post in your Archive, tap the three-dot menu, choose **Edit**, tap the tag and remove it, then save. Instagram doesn't typically notify someone when you remove their tag. Once the tag is gone, unarchive. You can add the tag back later if you want, but be aware that adding a tag generally does notify the person you tag.

### Collaborators

Collab posts appear on more than one profile. Archiving rules for these can differ, and an archived collab may still behave differently on the co-author's profile. If a collab post is the issue, check the post's menu for options to remove yourself as a collaborator, or talk to the other account.

## The Stories archive

Stories work differently from posts. They disappear from public view after 24 hours on their own, and the Stories archive is where they go next.

### How the Stories archive works

If the Stories archive setting is on, every Story you post is saved privately in your Archive after it expires. You can turn it into a Highlight, share it again as a new Story, or download it.

To check the setting:

1. Go to your profile, tap the menu icon, then **Settings**.
2. Find the section for archiving and downloading.
3. Make sure the option to save Stories to the archive is on.

You can also choose to save Stories to your phone automatically from the same section.

### Re-sharing an archived Story

Opening a Story in your Archive and tapping **Share** creates a brand-new Story, which your followers will see in the Stories bar like any other. Tagged or mentioned people may be notified again, since it's a new Story.

### Live archive

When available, live broadcasts can be kept in a Live archive for a limited period after the broadcast. Check the Live section of your Archive for the current retention period, since it has changed over time.

## Archive vs. delete vs. hide

| Option | What it does | Reversible? |
|---|---|---|
| Archive | Hides the post from everyone but you; keeps likes and comments | Yes, unarchive any time |
| Delete | Moves the post to Recently Deleted, where it's kept for a limited time (30 days at the time of writing) before it's gone for good | Only during that window |
| Hide like counts | Keeps the post visible but hides its like and view counts | Yes |
| Turn off comments | Keeps the post visible but stops new comments | Yes |
| Close Friends (Stories only) | Limits who sees a Story | Per Story |

For most cleanups, archive first. It's quiet, reversible and keeps your engagement history.

## Good reasons to archive (and a better habit)

People archive posts for plenty of reasons: a seasonal promotion that's ended, an old aesthetic that no longer fits the grid, a product that's sold out, or a personal post they'd rather keep private for now.

If you find yourself archiving a lot, it often helps to plan the grid before posting. Our [Instagram grid maker](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/instagram-grid-maker) shows how a split image will look across your profile, and the [Instagram photo resizer](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/instagram-photo-resizer) gets each image to the right shape so posts don't need fixing later.

A scheduler helps here too. Schedule For You lets you lay out feed posts, Reels and carousels on a calendar before they go live, so you can see how your grid will come together and move things around without publishing and then archiving. It can schedule Stories too, one image or video each.

## Frequently asked questions

### If I unarchive a post, does it notify tagged people?

Instagram doesn't document sending a new tag notification when you unarchive a post, and it isn't commonly reported to happen, but it's not officially guaranteed. If you want to be sure, edit the archived post to remove the tag first, then unarchive.

### Does unarchiving a post put it at the top of my profile?

No. An unarchived post goes back to its original spot on your grid, based on the date it was first posted. It isn't re-published as a new post.

### Can people see that I archived a post?

There's no notification or label. People may notice the post is missing if they look for it, and its likes and comments are hidden from them while it's archived.

### Do archived posts keep their likes and comments?

Yes. Archiving keeps everything: likes, comments, caption and tags. When you unarchive, it all comes back with the post.

### How long do archived posts stay in my Archive?

Archived posts stay until you unarchive or delete them. There's no automatic expiry for posts. Live archives are different and are kept only for a limited period.

### Can I archive Reels?

Yes. Open the Reel on your profile, tap the three-dot menu and choose Archive. It moves to your Archive alongside your other posts.
