Bluesky doesn't have a built-in download button for videos at the time of writing, for your own posts or anyone else's. The simplest way to have a copy of your own video is to keep the original file you uploaded. To save someone else's video for later, bookmark the post or share its link; if you want the actual file to use or repost, ask the creator for it. Third-party downloaders exist, but they come with risks, covered below.

## Your options at a glance

| What you want | Method | Gives you a file? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A video you posted | Keep the original upload, or re-export it from your editor | Yes |
| A copy of all your posts | Settings > Account > Export my data | Posts only; keep media separately |
| Someone else's video, to watch later | Bookmark the post or copy its link | No |
| Someone else's video, to show your followers | Repost or quote it | No |
| Someone else's video, to use in your own content | Ask the creator for the file and permission | Yes, with permission |
| A quick personal copy | Your phone's screen recorder | Yes, lower quality |

## Saving your own Bluesky videos

Bluesky compresses video when you upload it and streams it in small chunks, so the copy on Bluesky is never better than your original. Keep the source file in your camera roll, cloud drive or editing project. If you post the same clip to several networks, upload it once into a scheduler's media library and it's stored there too.

Bluesky's **Export my data** option (under Settings, then Account) downloads your account repository, a single file of your posts, likes and follows. It's useful as a backup but isn't a simple folder of videos, so don't rely on it to get media back.

## Saving someone else's video

For personal viewing, use what Bluesky gives you:

- **Bookmark** the post so you can find it again from your saved posts.
- **Copy the link** from the share menu and keep it in your notes.
- **Repost or quote** it if you want your followers to see it. The creator keeps the views and credit.

On a phone, the screen recorder (Control Center on iPhone, Quick Settings on Android) captures a video as it plays. The result is lower quality and picks up anything on screen, so it's fine for a personal reminder and nothing more.

## About third-party downloaders

Search for "Bluesky video downloader" and you'll find websites, browser extensions and command-line tools. Bluesky streams video as HLS (a playlist of short segments), and these tools stitch the segments back into an MP4. Before you use one:

- **Watch for ads and malware.** Downloader sites are often covered in pop-ups and fake download buttons. Browser extensions can read every page you visit, so only install one you trust.
- **Never give a downloader your password.** Public videos don't need a login. If a tool asks for one, use an app password at most, and delete it afterwards.
- **Copyright still applies.** A downloaded file is someone else's work. Reposting it, editing it into your own video or using it in an ad needs the creator's permission, and posting without it can get your account reported.

## Reposting your own video elsewhere

If the reason you want the file is to post the same video on other networks, skip the download. Upload the original once in Schedule For You, pick Bluesky, X, Threads, Instagram, TikTok or YouTube, tailor each caption and schedule them together. The [Bluesky scheduler page](https://scheduleforyou.com/bluesky) covers what's supported there, and our guide to [cross-posting to multiple platforms](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/how-to-cross-post-to-multiple-platforms) explains how to adapt one video for each network.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you download your own videos from Bluesky?
Not with a button in the app at the time of writing. Keep the original file you uploaded; that's also the best-quality copy.

### Does Bluesky notify someone when you save their video?
Bluesky doesn't notify anyone about bookmarks or screen recordings. Reposts and quotes do show up in the creator's notifications.

### Why is the video quality worse after downloading?
Bluesky compresses video on upload and may stream a lower-quality version on slow connections. Downloaders and screen recordings capture that compressed version.

### Is it legal to download Bluesky videos?
Saving a public video for personal viewing is usually low-risk, but the creator owns the copyright. Reusing or reposting it without permission can break copyright law and Bluesky's rules.
