Category: X.

To make your Twitter account public, open **Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety → Audience and tagging** and uncheck (or switch off) **Protect your posts**, then confirm. Your account becomes public right away, and anyone can see your posts, including the ones you shared while your account was protected.

The steps are almost the same on X (formerly Twitter) in a browser and in the mobile app. X renames menu items from time to time, so if a label looks slightly different on your screen, look for the closest match. The section names below are the ones in use at the time of writing.

## Quick answer: where the setting lives

| Where you are | Path to the setting | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Web (x.com) | More → Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety → Audience and tagging | Uncheck "Protect your posts" and confirm |
| iPhone app | Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety → Audience and tagging | Switch off "Protect your posts" |
| Android app | Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety → Audience and tagging | Switch off "Protect your posts" |

On some versions, the section is called **Audience, media and tagging** rather than Audience and tagging. It's the same place.

## How to make your X account public on the web

1. Go to x.com and sign in.
2. In the left-hand menu, click **More** (the three-dot icon), then **Settings and privacy**.
3. Click **Privacy and safety**.
4. Under "Your X activity", click **Audience and tagging**.
5. Uncheck the box next to **Protect your posts**.
6. Confirm the change in the pop-up if X asks you to.

The lock icon next to your name disappears once your account is public. Open your profile in a private browser window to check how it looks to people who aren't your followers. Depending on X's current rules for logged-out visitors, you may need to sign in with a second account to see the full public view.

## How to make your X account public in the app

The mobile apps for iPhone and Android follow the same structure.

1. Open the X app and tap your **profile picture** in the top-left corner.
2. Tap **Settings and privacy**.
3. Tap **Privacy and safety**.
4. Tap **Audience and tagging**.
5. Turn off the **Protect your posts** toggle.
6. Confirm if prompted.

If you can't find the setting, use the search bar at the top of the Settings screen and type "protect". It usually takes you straight to the right page.

### If the setting won't change

- **Update the app.** Older app versions sometimes show settings in a different place.
- **Try the website.** If the toggle doesn't stick in the app, make the change on x.com instead.
- **Check your account status.** If your account is locked or limited, some settings may be unavailable until you resolve the issue. X's [help center](https://help.x.com) explains how to unlock an account.

## What changes when your account is public

Making your account public changes who can see and interact with what you post. Here's what to expect at the time of writing.

| | Protected account | Public account |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Who sees your posts | Only approved followers | Anyone on X |
| New followers | Must request, and you approve | Can follow instantly |
| Reposts | Others can't repost your posts | Others can repost and quote you |
| Search | Your posts only appear in your followers' search results | Your posts can appear in X search for anyone |
| Older posts | Visible to followers only | Become public too |
| Replies to non-followers | Only your followers see them | Visible to anyone |

### Your old posts become public

This is the big one. Switching to public doesn't only affect future posts. Everything you posted while protected becomes visible to anyone. Before you switch, scroll through your profile and delete anything you wouldn't want strangers, employers or clients to read.

### Pending follow requests

If people sent follow requests while your account was protected, review them before you switch. Go to your follower requests (on the web, they appear under More or in your notifications, depending on the version) and approve the ones you want. X's help center explains how pending requests are handled when you unprotect, and the behavior has changed before, so it's safest to deal with them first.

### Search and discovery

Public posts can show up in X search, on hashtag pages and in recommendations for people who don't follow you. That's the main reason brands and creators keep their accounts public: protected posts can't reach anyone beyond your approved followers.

### Interactions you'll start to see

Once you're public, you're likely to see replies, quote posts and mentions from people you don't know. You can still control a lot of this:

- **Limit who can reply** to an individual post when you write it (everyone, accounts you follow, verified accounts, or only accounts you mention).
- **Mute or block** accounts that bother you.
- **Turn on quality filters** in your notification settings to reduce low-quality mentions.
- **Restrict who can tag you in photos** in the same Audience and tagging section.
- **Turn off direct messages from strangers** under Privacy and safety → Direct messages.

## Before you go public: a quick checklist

Going public is a good moment to tidy up your profile so first impressions are strong.

1. **Review old posts and media.** Delete anything you don't want public.
2. **Rewrite your bio.** You have 160 characters to say who you are and why people should follow. The free [X bio generator](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/x-bio-generator) gives you ideas that fit the limit.
3. **Check your display name and handle.** Display names can be up to 50 characters and handles 4 to 15 characters (letters, numbers and underscores).
4. **Update your profile and header images** so they're current and recognizable.
5. **Pin a post** that explains what you share.
6. **Check what personal details are visible**, such as your location or birth date, in your profile and Your account settings.

### If you're using X for a brand or creator account

A protected account defeats the purpose of posting for an audience you haven't met yet. Once you're public, a steady posting rhythm matters more than a burst of activity. Schedule For You can publish to X from the same queue and calendar as your other channels, with a separate X version of each caption and a live check against the 280-character limit. You can also try the free [X character counter](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/x-character-counter) to see how X counts links and emoji before you post.

## How to make your account private again

You can switch back at any time:

1. Go to **Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety → Audience and tagging**.
2. Check or switch on **Protect your posts**.

Your posts are then visible only to your current followers, and new followers have to request access. Keep in mind that anything people already saw, screenshotted or quoted while you were public may still exist elsewhere. Protecting your account later doesn't remove copies.

If your account is public but your posts still seem invisible, that's a different problem. Our guide to [checking whether you're shadowbanned on X](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/am-i-shadowbanned-twitter) explains X's visibility limits and how to check your account status.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I make my Twitter account public?

Go to Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety → Audience and tagging and uncheck "Protect your posts". The same path works on x.com and in the iPhone and Android apps. Your account becomes public as soon as you confirm.

### Will my old protected posts become public?

Yes. When you turn off "Protect your posts", the posts you shared while protected become visible to anyone. Review and delete anything you don't want public before you switch.

### Why can't I find "Protect your posts" on X?

The section may be labeled "Audience and tagging" or "Audience, media and tagging", depending on your version. Update the app, try x.com, or search for "protect" from the Settings screen.

### Can people still see my profile if my account is protected?

Yes. Your name, handle, bio, profile photo and follower counts are still visible. Only your posts and some activity are hidden from people who don't follow you.

### Does making my X account public notify my followers?

X doesn't announce the change to your followers. They'll simply notice the lock icon is gone, and new people can follow you without sending a request.

### How long does it take for my account to become public?

The change takes effect as soon as you confirm it. Your posts may take a little time to show up in X search results for other people.
