Instagram doesn't accept animated GIF files as feed posts or Reels: upload a `.gif` and it posts a single still frame. To post a GIF on Instagram, you convert it to a short MP4 video first, then post it as a Reel or feed video. Stories, comments and direct messages do support GIFs, through Instagram's built-in GIPHY search.

Here's each method.

## Post an animated GIF to the feed or as a Reel

1. **Convert the GIF to a video.** On a phone, apps like GIPHY, ImgPlay or GIF to Video export an MP4. On a computer, a free converter site or a video editor does it; export at 1080 pixels wide, with the GIF looped a few times so the clip runs at least 3 seconds.
2. **Open Instagram and tap +.** Choose **Reel** for a vertical clip or **Post** for a square or landscape one.
3. **Select the MP4.** Trim, add music or text if you like.
4. **Write the caption and share.**

Reels need to be at least 3 seconds; a 1-second GIF looped three or four times works. Instagram adds compression, so a clean, high-contrast GIF converts better than a grainy one.

## Add a GIF to a Story

1. Open the Story camera and pick a photo or video.
2. Tap the **sticker icon** and choose **GIF**.
3. Search GIPHY, tap a GIF, then resize and place it.

You can add several GIF stickers to one Story. To post your own GIF as a Story background, convert it to a video first as above.

## Send a GIF in a comment or DM

Comments: tap the **GIF** button in the comment box, search, and tap to post. DMs: tap the sticker icon in the message bar and choose **GIF**. Both use GIPHY; you can't upload your own file there.

## Schedule a GIF post

Once the GIF is an MP4 it's an ordinary video, so it can be scheduled like any other. Instagram's app schedules Reels for professional accounts, and a scheduler can post the same clip to Instagram, Facebook, X, Threads, Bluesky and TikTok from one queue. In Schedule For You, X and Threads take the converted video too, and X accepts a GIF file directly (up to 15 MB), so the X version can stay a true GIF while Instagram gets the MP4. Size the Instagram version with the [Instagram photo resizer](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/instagram-photo-resizer) if the frame needs cropping to 4:5 or 9:16.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you post a GIF on Instagram?
Not as a GIF file in the feed; Instagram posts a still frame. Convert it to a short MP4 and post it as a Reel or video. Stories, comments and DMs support GIFs through GIPHY.

### How do I turn a GIF into a video for Instagram?
Use a converter app (GIPHY, ImgPlay) or a video editor to export an MP4 at 1080 pixels wide, looped so it runs at least 3 seconds.

### Why does my GIF post as a still image?
Instagram only reads the first frame of a GIF file. Posting it as a video keeps the motion.

### Can you schedule a GIF on Instagram?
Yes, once it's an MP4. Instagram's app can schedule Reels for professional accounts, and schedulers can post the video to Instagram and other platforms at a set time.
