Category: Bluesky.

To post on Bluesky, tap the **pencil** (New post) button at the bottom right of the app, or **New Post** in the sidebar on the web, write up to 300 characters, add images, a video or a GIF if you like, and tap **Post**. That's it. Below are the options in the composer, how threads work, how to post GIFs, and how to schedule posts, which the Bluesky app can't do on its own.

## Post on Bluesky step by step

1. Open Bluesky and sign in.
2. Tap the **pencil** button (mobile) or **New Post** (web, left sidebar).
3. Write your post. The counter shows how many of the 300 characters you have left.
4. Optional: tap the **image** icon to add photos or a video, the **GIF** button for a GIF, or the **emoji** button.
5. Optional: tap **Anyone can interact** to limit replies and quotes.
6. Optional: tap the **language** label to set the post's language, which helps language-based feeds.
7. Tap **Post**.

The post goes to your profile and your followers' Following feed straight away, and may surface in Discover and custom feeds.

## What a Bluesky post can include

| Item | Limit at the time of writing |
| --- | --- |
| Text | 300 characters |
| Images | Up to 4 per post |
| Video | 1 per post, up to 10 minutes and 300 MB at the time of writing |
| GIF | 1, from the GIF picker or uploaded |
| Alt text | Up to 2,000 characters per image |
| Link preview | 1 link card, generated from the first link |

Full details are in our guide to the [Bluesky character limit](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/bluesky-character-limit).

## Can you upload GIFs to Bluesky?

Yes, two ways:

- **GIF picker.** Tap the **GIF** button in the composer and search. The GIF is embedded from Bluesky's GIF provider and plays in the feed.
- **Your own GIF.** Attach a GIF file through the image button. Current versions of the app treat an animated GIF like a short looping video. If your GIF shows as a still frame, convert it to an MP4 and attach that as a video instead.

Only one GIF or video fits in a post, and it can't be combined with images.

## How to post a thread on Bluesky

For anything over 300 characters, write a thread:

1. Write the first post.
2. Tap **Add another post** (the plus below the text box, or **+** in the composer) to add the next part.
3. Repeat, then tap **Post all**.

You can also reply to your own post later to extend it. Make the first post stand on its own, since that's the one people see in the feed.

## Can you edit a post on Bluesky?

No. Once a post is live you can delete it, but not edit it. Our guide to [editing Bluesky posts](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/can-you-edit-bluesky-posts) covers the workarounds. That's one reason scheduling helps: a queued post can be edited right up until it goes out.

## How to schedule posts on Bluesky

The Bluesky app has no scheduling. Schedule For You connects to Bluesky with an **app password** (create one in Bluesky under **Settings > Privacy and security > App passwords**), then lets you:

- Write a post with up to four images or a video and pick a time.
- Write a thread by putting a line with `---` between the parts; each part is checked against 300 characters before anything goes out.
- Add a first reply that posts right after the main post, such as a link.
- Send the same draft to X and Threads, with a tailored version for each.

Everything sits in one queue and calendar. See the [Bluesky scheduler page](https://scheduleforyou.com/bluesky) for what's supported, and [how to cross-post to multiple platforms](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/how-to-cross-post-to-multiple-platforms) if Bluesky is one of several channels.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I post on Bluesky from a computer?
Go to bsky.app, sign in, and click New Post in the left sidebar. The composer works the same as in the app.

### Can you upload GIFs to Bluesky?
Yes. Use the GIF button to search, or attach your own GIF file. If it doesn't animate, upload it as an MP4 video instead.

### Why can't I post on Bluesky?
Common causes are a post over 300 characters, an image that's too large, a video over the length or size limit, or an outage. Check our guide to [whether Bluesky is down](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/is-bluesky-down).

### Can I post the same thing to Bluesky and X?
Yes. Most X posts fit Bluesky's 300 characters unchanged. A scheduler can send both from one draft.
