To save an Instagram Reel, tap the bookmark (Save) icon on the Reel, or open the three-dot menu and choose Save. It goes to your private Saved folder, where you can sort it into Collections. If the Reel is your own, you can also download the video file to your phone from the Reel's menu or from Instagram's "Download your information" tool.

There are really two different jobs hiding behind "save a Reel": keeping a reference to something you want to watch again, and getting a copy of the video file. Instagram handles both, but in different ways, and the rules are different for your own content and for other people's.

## Quick answer: which save method do you need?

| What you want | Method | Works for |
|---|---|---|
| Watch it again later | Bookmark / Save | Any Reel you can see |
| Group saved Reels by topic | Collections | Anything you've saved |
| Keep the video file of your Reel | Download from the Reel menu | Your own Reels |
| Back up everything you've posted | Download your information | Your own account |
| Share it with someone | Send, Share to Story, Copy link | Reels whose owner allows sharing |
| Build on someone's Reel | Remix | Public Reels with remixing turned on |

Menu names move around between app versions, so if a label below doesn't match exactly, look for the closest equivalent in the same menu.

## How to save a Reel with the bookmark button

Saving is private. The creator doesn't get a notification with your name, and nobody else can see your Saved folder.

1. Open the Reel in the Reels tab, your feed, or the creator's profile.
2. Tap the three-dot menu (or the bookmark icon if it shows on screen).
3. Tap **Save**. The icon fills in to confirm.

To unsave, repeat the same steps and tap the filled icon again.

### Where saved Reels go

Open your profile, tap the menu icon in the top corner, and choose **Saved**. You'll see an "All posts" view plus any Collections you've created. Reels, photos and carousels all live here together.

Saved items stay there as long as the original post exists. If the creator deletes or archives the Reel, or makes their account private and you don't follow them, it disappears from your Saved folder too. That's the main limit of bookmarking: you're saving a pointer, not a copy.

## How to organize saved Reels into Collections

Collections turn a long, messy Saved folder into something you can actually use, like "Recipes to try," "Hook ideas," or "Competitor examples."

### Create a Collection while saving

1. Tap and hold the Save option, or tap Save and then look for the prompt to add it to a Collection.
2. Choose an existing Collection or tap the plus sign to make a new one.
3. Name it and confirm.

### Create a Collection from your Saved folder

1. Go to your profile, open the menu and tap **Saved**.
2. Tap the plus icon to create a new Collection.
3. Name it, then select items from your saved posts to add.

### Collaborative Collections

Instagram also lets you share a Collection with friends through a DM thread, so everyone can add Reels to it. This is handy for teams who collect inspiration together, though it's still a list of links to other people's posts, not a shared folder of video files.

## How to download your own Reels

When the Reel is yours, you're free to keep the video file. There are three official routes.

### Download a single Reel from the app

1. Open the Reel on your profile.
2. Tap the three-dot menu.
3. Choose the download or "Save to camera roll" option (the label varies by app version).

Depending on your settings and app version, the file may be saved with or without the original audio. Licensed music from Instagram's library often can't be included in the downloaded file, so expect some exports to be silent or to keep only your original sound.

### Save Reels before you post them

In the Reels editor, there's usually a download arrow at the top of the screen. Tapping it saves your edited video, with text and effects, to your phone before you publish. Doing this every time is the simplest backup habit you can build.

Instagram also has a setting that saves your original posts to your phone automatically. Look in **Settings**, then the archiving and downloading section, for an option to save original posts or Reels to your device.

### Download your information

If you want every Reel you've ever posted in one go, use Instagram's account data export:

1. Go to **Settings**, then **Accounts Center**.
2. Open **Your information and permissions**, then **Download your information**.
3. Choose your Instagram account and pick the types of information you want (you can limit it to posts and Reels).
4. Choose a date range, format and media quality, then submit the request.
5. Instagram emails you when the file is ready. Download it before the link expires.

The export arrives as a zip file. Your videos are inside a media folder, organized by date. Instagram's help center at [help.instagram.com](https://help.instagram.com) has the current steps if the menus change.

## What about other people's Reels?

This is where a lot of advice online goes wrong. Third-party "Reel downloader" sites ask you to paste a link and give you the video. Using them to grab someone else's content can break Instagram's terms, and reposting that content without permission can infringe the creator's copyright. Many of these sites are also full of aggressive ads and questionable redirects.

Here's what you can do instead, within the rules.

### Bookmark it

For most people, saving to a Collection is all they need. You can rewatch it any time, as long as the creator keeps it up.

### Use Instagram's own download option, where offered

Instagram lets creators decide whether people can download their public Reels. If a creator has allowed it and the feature is available in your region, you'll see a download option in the Reel's share or three-dot menu. These downloads typically include an Instagram watermark with the creator's username. Treat them as personal copies, not material to repost as your own.

### Share instead of reposting

Tap the paper airplane icon to send a Reel in a DM, add it to your Story, or copy the link. The creator keeps the credit and the views, and the post links back to them.

### Remix it

If remixing is turned on, the three-dot menu shows a **Remix** option. You can record alongside the original, react to it, or add your own clip after it. The result is credited to the original creator automatically, which makes it the proper way to build on someone else's Reel.

### Ask for permission

If you run a brand account and want to feature a creator's Reel, message them, ask for written permission, and credit them clearly. Instagram's collab feature lets you co-publish so the post shows on both profiles.

## Tips for keeping your own Reels safe

Your Reels are work. A little housekeeping protects it.

- **Keep the master file.** Edit in an app that saves a full-quality export, and keep that file somewhere other than your phone. The version Instagram stores is compressed.
- **Export at the right size.** Reels are 1080×1920 (9:16). If your cover image or thumbnail needs adjusting, the [Instagram photo resizer](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/instagram-photo-resizer) crops or pads images to that size in your browser. Our guide to [Instagram Reel size](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/reel-size-instagram) covers safe zones and covers.
- **Run a periodic export.** A "Download your information" request every few months gives you a full backup in case you lose access to your account.
- **Track what you saved and why.** If you use Collections for inspiration, add a quick note in a doc or spreadsheet about what made each Reel worth saving. Patterns show up quickly.

## Turning saved Reels into a posting plan

Saved Reels are most useful when they feed your own content. Once a week, open your inspiration Collections and write down the formats you keep saving: a type of hook, a pacing style, a recurring series. Then plan your own versions.

If you post across several platforms, a scheduler keeps that plan moving. Schedule For You lets you write a post once, tailor the caption for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and the rest, and drop each version on a calendar. Your own edited Reel files can live in the media library so you're not hunting through your camera roll at posting time.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does the creator know when I save their Reel?

No. Saving is private, and the creator isn't told who saved it. Creators with professional accounts can see a total count of saves in their insights, but not the names of the people who saved.

### Why did a Reel disappear from my Saved folder?

The creator probably deleted it, archived it, or made their account private. Saved items are links to the original post, so when the original is gone or hidden from you, the saved entry goes too.

### Can I save a Reel with its music?

Bookmarking keeps everything, since you're watching the original. When downloading your own Reel, licensed tracks from Instagram's music library are often stripped from the file. If audio matters, keep your own edit with your own or properly licensed sound.

### Is it legal to download someone else's Reel?

Downloading for personal viewing through Instagram's own download option, when the creator has allowed it, is within the platform's rules. Reposting someone else's Reel without permission can infringe their copyright and break Instagram's terms. Share, remix or ask for permission instead.

### How do I save Reels on desktop?

On instagram.com, open the Reel and click the bookmark icon. Your Saved folder is on your profile page. Collections and downloads are easier to manage in the mobile app.

### Can I download all my Reels at once?

Yes. Use **Download your information** in Accounts Center and select your posts and Reels. Instagram prepares a zip file and emails you a link when it's ready.
