To schedule social media posts, write the post in the platform's composer, choose **Schedule** instead of **Publish**, and pick a date and time. Most networks have this built in: Instagram, Facebook (through Meta Business Suite), X, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest and Threads all schedule natively, while Bluesky and Google Business Profile don't at the time of writing. Native scheduling is free but works one platform at a time, so if the same post goes to three or more accounts, a scheduler that publishes to all of them from one queue saves the repeat work.

Below: the whole process from plan to published, the native route on each platform, where it gets inconvenient, how the options compare, and the same job done in Schedule For You.

## The process: from plan to published

Scheduling is the last step of a short routine. Skip the earlier ones and you end up scheduling whatever's ready, not what you planned.

1. **Plan.** Decide what goes out this week and where, on a [social media content calendar](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/social-media-content-calendar).
2. **Write and adapt.** Draft one core post, then adjust it per platform: X allows 280 characters, Bluesky 300, Threads 500, LinkedIn 3,000, and Instagram needs an image or video.
3. **Prepare media.** Crop and export at each platform's size before you upload.
4. **Schedule.** Pick an exact time for date-sensitive posts, or drop routine posts into fixed weekly time slots.
5. **Review.** Have someone check posts that need sign-off before they go out.
6. **Monitor.** Check that each post published, and fix and retry any that a platform rejected.

## How to schedule posts natively, platform by platform

Each network's own scheduler, where it lives and how far ahead it allows, at the time of writing. Menus move between app versions, so the labels may differ slightly in yours.

| Platform | Where to schedule | How far ahead | Our step-by-step guide |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Instagram | In the app (professional accounts) or Meta Business Suite | 75 days in the app; about 29 days in Business Suite | [Schedule Instagram posts](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/how-to-schedule-instagram-posts) |
| Facebook Pages | Meta Business Suite | About 29 days for most post types | [Schedule a Facebook post](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/how-to-schedule-a-post-on-facebook) |
| X | x.com on desktop, calendar icon in the composer | Up to 18 months; not in the mobile app | [Schedule tweets](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/how-to-schedule-tweets) |
| LinkedIn | Clock icon next to Post, on a profile or Page | Up to 3 months | [Schedule LinkedIn posts](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/how-to-schedule-linkedin-posts) |
| TikTok | TikTok's website, when uploading | 15 minutes to 10 days | [Schedule TikTok posts](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/how-to-schedule-tiktok-posts) |
| YouTube | YouTube Studio, Visibility step, Schedule | No stated maximum | [Schedule YouTube videos and Shorts](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/how-to-schedule-youtube-videos-and-shorts) |
| Pinterest | Business accounts, "Publish at a later date" | 30 days, up to 100 scheduled pins | [Schedule pins](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/how-to-schedule-pins-on-pinterest) |
| Threads | The **…** menu in the composer | Up to 75 days | [Threads limits and scheduling](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/threads-character-limit) |
| Bluesky | No built-in scheduler | Needs a third-party tool | [Schedule Bluesky posts](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/how-to-schedule-bluesky-posts) |
| Google Business Profile | No built-in scheduler | Needs a third-party tool | [GBP posts and scheduling](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/google-business-profile-post-character-limit) |

The steps are nearly identical everywhere:

1. Open the composer on the platform (on desktop for X and TikTok).
2. Write the caption and attach the media.
3. Look for **Schedule**, a clock icon or a calendar icon instead of the Post button.
4. Choose the date and time. Check the timezone, which is usually your device's.
5. Confirm. The post now sits in that platform's scheduled list until it goes out.

To change it later, find the platform's scheduled list (for example LinkedIn's **View all scheduled posts**, or Planner in Meta Business Suite) and edit, reschedule or delete it there.

## Where native scheduling gets inconvenient

Native schedulers are fine for one or two networks. The work multiplies with every platform you add.

Take a freelance illustrator who finishes a new piece and wants it on Instagram, Threads, X, Bluesky, LinkedIn and Pinterest next Tuesday at 10:00, then goes on holiday for two weeks.

- **Six composers, six uploads.** The same image is uploaded six times, and the caption is pasted and trimmed six times: 280 characters for X, 300 for Bluesky, a longer story for LinkedIn, a keyword-rich description for Pinterest.
- **Bluesky has no scheduler.** Either someone posts it by hand on Tuesday from the beach, or it doesn't go out.
- **Different horizons.** Two weeks of posts is fine for most platforms, but a TikTok post planned for day 12 can't be scheduled before leaving, because the native window is 10 days.
- **No single list.** Checking that everything is lined up means opening six apps. If Instagram rejects a post, the only notice is in the Instagram app.
- **Changes don't travel.** Spot a typo in the caption and it's six edits.

For two weeks of three posts a week, that's well over a hundred separate steps before the trip.

## Native schedulers vs. other options

| Option | Cost | Best for | Limits |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Each platform's native scheduler | Free | One or two networks, occasional posts | One platform per tool; no Bluesky or Google Business Profile; horizons from 10 days to 18 months |
| Meta Business Suite | Free | Facebook Pages and Instagram together | Meta's apps only |
| Posting by hand at the time | Free | Live, reactive posts | You have to be there at the right moment |
| A multi-platform scheduler (Schedule For You, Buffer, Hootsuite, Later and others) | Paid, from $19/month for 15 accounts with Schedule For You | Several networks or several accounts from one queue | Costs money; Schedule For You posts to personal LinkedIn profiles, not company pages, and has no engagement analytics yet |

If you mainly post to Facebook and Instagram, Meta Business Suite is a good free choice. Comparing paid tools? See our [Buffer alternatives](https://scheduleforyou.com/best-buffer-alternatives) roundup.

## The same job in Schedule For You

Here's the illustrator's Tuesday post and the two weeks after it, done once.

### Write once, adapt per platform

Click **Create post**, tick the accounts, and write the caption. Each platform gets its own tab, so you can shorten the X version or expand the LinkedIn one without touching the others, and the counters show each limit as you type (Bluesky 300, X 280, LinkedIn 3,000, Instagram 2,200). Problems such as a missing image for Instagram show under **Fix before publishing** before you can schedule.

![New post in Schedule For You with Bluesky, X, Instagram and LinkedIn selected, a tab for each platform, character counters for each, and Publish now, Schedule, Add to queue and Save draft options](https://scheduleforyou.com/images/blog/composer-four-platforms-1440x900.webp)

Then choose:

- **Schedule** for an exact date and time, in your workspace's timezone. Bluesky and Google Business Profile included.
- **Add to queue** to drop it into the next open posting slot.
- **Publish now** or **Save draft**.

### Two weeks of posts with time slots

Set posting slots once in **Settings**, for example Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9:00 and 17:30. Every post added to the queue, or uploaded in **Bulk scheduling**, fills the next open slot in order, so two weeks of work takes one sitting.

The TikTok post for day 12 is scheduled with the rest: Schedule For You holds it and publishes it at the time you chose.

### One place to check, and alerts when something fails

The **Queue** lists every upcoming post across accounts. If a platform rejects one (a video that's too short, a caption that's too long after link expansion), it lands in **Failed** with the reason and a **Retry** button, and with failure emails switched on in Settings you hear about it straight away.

Plans start at $19 a month for 15 connected accounts, with a 7-day free trial (card required, not charged until day 8).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you schedule posts on every social media platform?

Most of them. Instagram, Facebook Pages, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest and Threads have native scheduling. Bluesky and Google Business Profile don't at the time of writing, so you need a third-party scheduler for those.

### What is the best free way to schedule social media posts?

Use each platform's own scheduler, and Meta Business Suite for Facebook and Instagram together. They're free and official. Our list of the [best free social media schedulers](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/best-free-social-media-schedulers) covers the options and their limits.

### Do scheduled posts get less reach?

Not because they're scheduled. Posts published through official APIs are treated the same as posts made in the app. Reach depends on the content and when your audience is online. More in [do scheduled posts get less views](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/do-scheduled-posts-get-less-views).

### Can I schedule the same post to several platforms at once?

Not with native tools, except Meta Business Suite for Facebook and Instagram. A scheduler like Schedule For You sends one post to as many connected accounts as you select, with a separate caption per platform when you need one. See [how to cross-post to multiple platforms](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/how-to-cross-post-to-multiple-platforms).

### How far in advance can I schedule social media posts?

It depends on the platform: TikTok allows 10 days on its website, Meta Business Suite about 29 days, Pinterest 30 days, Instagram and Threads 75 days, LinkedIn 3 months and X 18 months, at the time of writing. A third-party scheduler holds the post itself, so its limit doesn't depend on the platform's window.

### What should I set up after scheduling my first posts?

Automate the routine parts: posting slots, bulk uploads, evergreen posts and RSS auto-post. Our guide to [automating social media scheduling](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/how-to-automate-social-media-scheduling) covers each one, and [planning content in advance](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/plan-content-in-advance) gives you a weekly routine to keep the queue full.
