Category: TikTok.

To turn off contacts on TikTok, go to **Profile > menu (three lines) > Settings and privacy > Privacy > Sync contacts and Facebook friends**, switch off **Sync contacts**, then tap **Remove previously synced contacts**. To stop TikTok suggesting your account to people in your phone book, go to **Privacy > Suggest your account to others** and switch off **Contacts** (and the other toggles there if you want to stay out of suggestions entirely).

Both steps matter. The first stops TikTok reading your contacts; the second stops your account being shown to people who have your number.

## Turn off contact syncing

1. Open TikTok and tap **Profile**.
2. Tap the **menu** icon in the top right, then **Settings and privacy**.
3. Tap **Privacy**, then **Sync contacts and Facebook friends**.
4. Turn off **Sync contacts**.
5. Tap **Remove previously synced contacts** and confirm.

You can also revoke the permission at the phone level, which stops any app asking again:

- **iPhone:** Settings > Apps > TikTok > Contacts, set to None (on older iOS versions, Settings > TikTok > Contacts).
- **Android:** Settings > Apps > TikTok > Permissions > Contacts > Don't allow.

## Stop TikTok suggesting your account to people you know

1. Go to **Settings and privacy > Privacy**.
2. Tap **Suggest your account to others**.
3. Switch off **Contacts**, **Facebook friends**, **People with mutual connections** and **People who open or send links to you**, depending on which you want.

TikTok says it may still suggest accounts based on contacts that were synced in the past, and other people can still find you if *they* synced a contact list that includes your number. Turning everything off reduces suggestions; it doesn't make you invisible. For that, a **private account** (Privacy > Private account) is the stronger setting.

| Setting | What it stops |
| --- | --- |
| Sync contacts | TikTok reading your phone contacts |
| Remove previously synced contacts | Contacts TikTok already stored |
| Suggest your account to others > Contacts | Your account appearing to people with your number |
| Private account | Non-followers seeing your videos |

Labels change between app versions and regions; if a toggle isn't where we say, search for it in the search bar at the top of Settings and privacy.

## How to turn off notifications on TikTok

1. Go to **Settings and privacy > Notifications**.
2. Turn off the categories you don't want: likes, comments, new followers, mentions, direct messages, videos from accounts you follow, LIVE, and suggestions.
3. To silence TikTok completely, turn off notifications for the app in your phone settings (iPhone: Settings > Notifications > TikTok; Android: Settings > Apps > TikTok > Notifications).

If you run a brand or creator account, keep comments and mentions on and turn off the rest. Those are the notifications that need a reply.

## How to see less AI-generated content on TikTok

TikTok added an **AI-generated content** slider to its topic controls. At the time of writing it's at **Settings and privacy > Content preferences > Manage topics** (on some versions under **Content and display** first). Move the slider toward less and save.

Two limits: it reduces AI videos rather than removing them, and it only works on videos labeled as AI-generated. TikTok asks creators to label realistic AI content and reads Content Credentials (C2PA) data to label some videos automatically.

You can't switch off TikTok's own AI features, such as AI-made effects or search summaries, with one toggle. You can simply not use them, and you can mute keywords you're tired of with **Content preferences > Filter keywords**.

## If you post on TikTok for a business

Privacy settings shape who finds you. A business account that turns off every suggestion will grow more slowly, so most brands leave "Suggest your account to others" on and turn off contact sync only on a personal phone. If you post from a shared work phone, connecting TikTok to a scheduler means the account doesn't need to live on anyone's personal device. Schedule For You [publishes TikTok videos and photo posts](https://scheduleforyou.com/tiktok) from a web dashboard, with privacy set per post.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does TikTok tell people when I sync contacts?
No message is sent to your contacts. But if you leave suggestions on, people in your contacts may see your account under "Suggested accounts."

### Will turning off contacts remove the people I already follow?
No. Follows stay as they are. It only stops TikTok using your address book to make new suggestions.

### Why does TikTok still suggest my friends after I turned off contacts?
TikTok also uses mutual connections, Facebook friends, links you open or send, and contacts other people synced. Turn off each toggle under Suggest your account to others, and note that past matches may linger.

### Can I turn off the For You page?
No. You can switch to the Following feed, refresh your For You feed in Content preferences, and filter keywords, but there's no setting that removes For You.
