If someone blocked you on Instagram, you can't see their profile, posts or stories from your account, and there's no setting that undoes it. If their account is **public**, its posts are still visible to anyone who isn't logged in, so opening instagram.com/theirname in a private browser window usually shows the grid until Instagram asks you to log in. If the account is **private**, nothing will show it to you, and the sites that claim otherwise are scams.

Below is what a block does, the options that stay within Instagram's rules, and the ones to avoid.

## What a block hides

| On your account, after they block you | What you see |
| --- | --- |
| Their profile | "User not found" or an empty profile with no posts |
| Search | They usually don't appear |
| Posts and Reels | Hidden from your feed and their grid |
| Stories and Notes | Hidden |
| Messages | Your old chat may remain, but new messages don't reach them |
| Comments and likes | You can't see or interact with their content |
| Tags and mentions | You can't tag or mention them |

Instagram also offers people a "block other accounts they may have or create" option when they block someone, so a second account of yours may be blocked too. Instagram doesn't notify you when you're blocked.

## Is it a block, or something else?

"User not found" doesn't always mean a block. The same message appears when an account is deactivated, deleted, suspended or renamed. A quick way to tell:

- **Ask a friend to search for the account.** If they see it and you don't, it's likely a block.
- **Check an old message thread.** If their name still shows but the profile won't open, a block is likely.
- **Look for a new username.** If they renamed the account, the old link breaks for everyone.

## Legitimate ways to see a public profile

These don't break any rules, because a public profile is meant to be seen by anyone.

1. **Log out, or use a private browser window.** Visit instagram.com/username. Instagram shows a limited number of posts before asking you to log in, and Stories need an account.
2. **Ask a mutual friend.** If there's a real reason you need to see something, such as a post about you, a friend can look or send you a screenshot.
3. **Check other places the person posts.** Many people share the same content on Threads, Facebook or TikTok, where they may not have blocked you.

A block is a clear signal that the person doesn't want contact. Creating extra accounts to watch or contact someone who blocked you can be treated as harassment, and Instagram can disable accounts for it.

## Why "private Instagram viewer" sites don't work

Sites and apps that promise to show private or blocked profiles have no access Instagram doesn't give everyone. They usually:

- Ask you to complete "verification" surveys or download apps, which earn them money.
- Ask for your Instagram login, which they use to take over or spam from your account.
- Show fake or recycled photos, or nothing at all.

Never type your Instagram password into a third-party viewer. If you already did, change your password and turn on two-factor authentication in Accounts Center.

## If you blocked someone and want to see their profile

If you're the one who blocked them, you can unblock: go to **Settings and activity**, then **Blocked**, and tap **Unblock** next to the name. Their public profile is visible again straight away. Your previous follow isn't restored, so you'd need to follow again, and they get no notification of the unblock.

## If a business blocked you

If a brand or creator account blocked your personal account, you can still see its public profile logged out. For a genuine customer issue, use the contact details in its bio, its website or its Facebook Page. If you manage a brand yourself, it's worth reviewing who your team blocks: blocks made in the Instagram app apply to the whole account, whoever is posting from the schedule.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you see a private Instagram account that blocked you?
No. A private account only shows posts to approved followers, and a block removes you from that list. No setting, site or app can change that.

### Can I see a blocked profile if I log out?
If the account is public, yes, briefly: instagram.com/username shows some posts before asking you to log in. Stories, highlights and full browsing need an account.

### Does "User not found" always mean I'm blocked?
No. Deactivated, deleted, suspended and renamed accounts show the same message. Ask a friend to search for the account to tell the difference.

### Will someone know if I look at their profile after they blocked me?
Instagram doesn't show anyone who viewed their profile or posts. Story views are different: if you watch a story from another account while logged in, that account's name appears in the viewer list.

### Are private Instagram viewer apps safe?
No. They can't show private content, and many are designed to steal logins or push you into surveys and downloads.
