Category: Instagram.

The Instagram caption character limit is **2,200 characters**, including spaces, emoji, line breaks and hashtags, and a caption can hold up to **30 hashtags**. The feed shows only the first 125 characters or so before **…more**, so the first line carries the post.

Below are the rest of Instagram's limits, where captions get cut, and how to keep a long caption readable.

## Instagram limits at a glance

| Where | Limit |
| --- | --- |
| Post and Reel caption | 2,200 characters |
| Hashtags per caption | 30 |
| Mentions per caption | 20 |
| Comment | 2,200 characters |
| Bio | 150 characters |
| Name field | 30 characters |
| Username | 30 characters |
| Alt text | 100 characters |
| Story text | No fixed limit, but keep it short enough to read in a few seconds |

Instagram adjusts these occasionally; its help center is the final word.

## Where the caption truncates

The feed cuts a caption after roughly 125 characters, or at the first line break if that comes sooner, and shows **…more**. Reels show even less in the full-screen player. Put the hook, the offer or the question first, then the detail.

Line breaks are kept if you add them in the app or through the API. Pasting from some apps collapses them, which is why people use a [line break generator](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/instagram-line-break-generator) to keep paragraphs apart.

## Hashtags: in the caption or the first comment?

Instagram has said hashtags in the caption and in the first comment work the same for discovery. The caption version adds clutter below the text; the comment version keeps the caption clean. Instagram also suggests three to five relevant hashtags rather than the full 30.

## Counting captions before you post

Instagram counts emoji as one character each and counts every hashtag in full. If you write one caption for several platforms, the limits differ: X allows 280 characters, Bluesky 300, Threads 500 and LinkedIn 3,000. Schedule For You shows a live count against each platform's limit as you type, flags anything over, and lets you tailor the Instagram caption on its own, so a long Instagram caption and a short X post can come from one draft. See the [Instagram scheduler page](https://scheduleforyou.com/instagram) for what's supported.
