Category: Instagram.

The best Instagram post size is **1080×1350 pixels (4:5 portrait)**. It takes up the most space in the feed. Square posts work at **1080×1080 (1:1)** and landscape posts at **1080×566 (1.91:1)**. Reels and Stories are **1080×1920 (9:16)**, and your profile photo should be at least **320×320**. On your profile grid, every post is previewed as a **3:4** crop, so keep the important part of the image near the center.

These values are correct at the time of writing. Instagram changes its formats from time to time, so check the [Instagram Help Center](https://help.instagram.com) if something looks off.

## Aspect ratio and pixels, quickly explained

**Aspect ratio** is the shape of an image: width compared to height. 1:1 is square, 4:5 is slightly taller than wide, and 9:16 is a full phone screen. **Pixels** are the actual size. Instagram displays images at up to 1080 pixels wide, so 1080 is the width to export at. A larger image gets scaled down, and a smaller one gets scaled up and can look soft.

To check an image's ratio, divide width by height. Feed posts must sit between **0.8 (4:5)** and **1.91 (landscape)**. Anything taller or wider gets cropped in the app.

## Instagram feed post size

### Portrait: 1080×1350 (4:5)
Portrait is the best choice for most posts. It takes up more of the screen as people scroll, so your post gets more attention than a square or landscape one. It suits people, products, food, fashion and text-heavy graphics.

### Square: 1080×1080 (1:1)
The classic Instagram shape. It's a safe choice for logos, quotes, product shots on a plain background and anything with a centered subject.

### Landscape: 1080×566 (1.91:1)
Landscape works for wide scenes, group photos and screenshots of wide content, but it shows up small in a vertical feed. If a wide photo matters, consider splitting it into a seamless carousel with the [Instagram carousel splitter](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/instagram-carousel-splitter).

### What about 3:4 (1080×1440)?
At the time of writing the Instagram app also accepts 3:4 portrait photos, the native shape of most phone cameras. Posts published by scheduling tools go through Instagram's publishing API, which still requires the 4:5 to 1.91:1 range. If you schedule posts, export at 4:5. Our guide on [why Instagram crops photos](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/instagram-aspect-ratio-cropping) explains what happens to other shapes.

## Instagram profile grid size: the 3:4 preview

Your profile grid shows each post as a **3:4 thumbnail**, taller than a square. A 4:5 post loses a small strip at the top and bottom on the grid. A square or landscape post is cropped at the sides. The full post still shows in the feed.

To keep posts looking good on the grid:
- **Keep faces, logos and text in the center** of the image.
- **Leave space at the edges** of square and landscape posts, since they're cropped at the sides.
- **Plan multi-post layouts with the 3:4 crop in mind.** The [Instagram grid maker](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/instagram-grid-maker) splits one image into tiles for a seamless grid.

## Instagram carousel size

A carousel can hold several photos and videos in one post. Every slide is shown in the same shape, set by the **first slide**. If the first slide is 4:5, the rest are shown at 4:5, and slides of other shapes are cropped to fit.

For the best results:
- **Export every slide at the same size**, ideally 1080×1350.
- **Crop images yourself before uploading**, so you choose what's trimmed instead of leaving it to Instagram.
- **Watch the slide limit.** Scheduled carousels can have up to 10 items. Our guide to the [Instagram carousel limit](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/instagram-carousel-limit) explains why the app allows more.

## Instagram Reels size

Reels should be **1080×1920 pixels (9:16)**, the full height of a phone screen. A Reel in another shape gets black bars or is cropped. The cover image should be the same size. On your profile grid it's cropped to 3:4, so keep the title and faces near the middle.

Instagram's buttons, username and caption sit on top of the bottom and right side of every Reel. Keep important text and faces away from those areas. Our [Instagram Reel size guide](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/reel-size-instagram) covers safe zones, cover crops and export settings in detail.

## Instagram Story size

Stories are also **1080×1920 pixels (9:16)**. Instagram shows your profile picture and name at the top and the reply bar at the bottom, so keep text and logos out of roughly the **top and bottom 250 pixels**.

Have a square or landscape photo? Put it in the middle of the Story and use the space above and below for text, stickers or a background color. Our guide on [scheduling Instagram Stories](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/schedule-instagram-and-facebook-stories) shows how to schedule them with Meta Business Suite or Schedule For You.

## Instagram profile picture size

Upload a square image of at least **320×320 pixels**. Instagram displays it as a circle everywhere: on your profile, in the Stories bar, next to your posts and in DMs. The corners are cut off, so keep your face or logo centered with a little space around it. A bigger upload, such as 1080×1080, also works and stays sharp.

## File types and file sizes

- **Photos:** JPG is the safest format. The app also accepts PNG and other common types, but Instagram's publishing API accepts JPG only, so Schedule For You converts PNG and WebP images to JPG automatically when a post goes to Instagram.
- **Videos:** MP4 or MOV, with H.264 video and AAC audio.
- **Sharpness:** export at 1080 pixels wide. Very large files are compressed by Instagram anyway, and heavy compression is a common cause of blurry posts.

## Instagram ad sizes

Ads use the same shapes as organic posts: **1:1 or 4:5** for feed ads and **9:16 (1080×1920)** for Story and Reels ads. A boosted post keeps the size it was published at. For full ad specs, file limits and text guidelines, check Meta's Ads Guide, since ad requirements change more often than post sizes.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best Instagram post size?
1080×1350 pixels at a 4:5 ratio. Portrait posts take up the most space in the feed. Square (1080×1080) and landscape (1080×566) posts also work.

### What size is an Instagram post in pixels?
Instagram displays posts at up to 1080 pixels wide. Use 1080×1350 for portrait, 1080×1080 for square and 1080×566 for landscape.

### Is the Instagram grid 4:5 or 3:4?
The profile grid previews posts at 3:4. Your post itself can be 4:5, 1:1 or 1.91:1, but keep the important part inside the center so it isn't cut off on the grid.

### What size are Instagram Reels and Stories?
Both are 1080×1920 pixels at a 9:16 ratio. Keep text away from the top and bottom, where Instagram places its buttons and profile details.

### How do I post a picture on Instagram without cropping?
Resize it to a supported shape before you upload: 4:5, 1:1 or 1.91:1 for feed posts. To keep the whole image, use the "fit" option in the [Instagram photo resizer](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/instagram-photo-resizer), which adds a border instead of cutting anything off.

### What size should an Instagram profile picture be?
At least 320×320 pixels, square. Instagram shows it as a circle, so keep the subject centered.
