Category: Bluesky.

Yes, Bluesky is good for many artists, especially illustrators, comic artists, photographers and writers. The Following feed is chronological, art communities run their own feeds that surface new work, image posts aren't held back for not being video, and Bluesky has said it doesn't train generative AI on user posts. The trade-offs: the audience is smaller than Instagram's or TikTok's, there's no shop or commissions feature, and your posts are public on an open network. Most artists treat it as one channel among several, not a replacement.

## What works for artists on Bluesky

- **You choose what you see.** The Following feed shows the accounts you follow in order, with no algorithm deciding that your latest piece isn't worth showing.
- **Art feeds and starter packs.** Community-made feeds pull in posts by hashtag, keyword or member list, so a new piece can reach people who don't follow you yet. Starter packs for illustration, comics, photography and other fields help new followers find you.
- **Images aren't second-class.** Bluesky is built around text and images. Since an April 2026 update, photos display at up to 4,000 pixels (up from 2,000) and multi-image posts show as a swipeable carousel that keeps each image's shape, at the time of writing.
- **Links aren't buried.** A post linking to your shop, Patreon or portfolio isn't hidden for leaving the app.
- **Your own domain as your handle.** A handle like @yourstudio.com doubles as proof that the account is really you, which helps against impersonators.

## What's missing

| Missing | What artists do instead |
| --- | --- |
| A shop or commissions feature | Link to your shop, Ko-fi or commission form in your bio and pinned post |
| Ads | Grow organically through feeds, starter packs and reposts |
| Built-in analytics | Track likes, reposts and link clicks yourself, or use UTM links |
| Large audience | Post to Instagram, Threads or Tumblr as well |
| Protection from scraping | Watermark or post lower-resolution versions |

## Bluesky and AI

Bluesky said in late 2024 that it doesn't use user content to train generative AI and has no plans to; the AI it uses is for moderation and ranking the Discover feed. That's the company's own policy. Bluesky is an open network, though, so public posts can be read by anyone, including outside crawlers, and the company has said that robots.txt can't guarantee others respect your wishes. If that worries you, post smaller versions, watermark your work and keep full-resolution files for clients and your shop.

## Content labels for art

If you draw nudity or gore, label the post when you upload images: Bluesky offers self-labels such as **Suggestive**, **Nudity**, **Porn** (sexually explicit) and **Graphic media**; label names can vary slightly by app version. Labeled posts appear behind a warning or are hidden depending on each viewer's settings, which keeps your account in good standing and lets people who want that work see it. Unlabeled adult content can be labeled by moderators, which can affect your reach.

## How to post art on Bluesky

1. **Lead with the image, add a line of context.** Title, medium, a short story about the piece. Bluesky posts are 300 characters; our [Bluesky character limit](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/bluesky-character-limit) guide covers the details.
2. **Write alt text.** Describe the piece for people using screen readers. It's also a courtesy the Bluesky art community notices.
3. **Use one or two tags the art feeds pick up**, such as the ones listed in each feed's description.
4. **Post work-in-progress shots.** Sketches and process clips get replies and keep followers around between finished pieces.
5. **Post when your followers are online**, and keep a steady rhythm.

If you post the same piece to Bluesky, Instagram, Threads and X, Schedule For You lets you upload the images once, tailor the caption for each network and schedule them together. Alt text needs to be added in the Bluesky app for now, so if alt text matters for a piece, post that one natively. ## Frequently asked questions

### Is Bluesky better than Instagram for artists?
It's different. Instagram has a far bigger audience and pushes Reels; Bluesky is smaller, chronological by default and friendlier to still images and links. Many artists post to both.

### Does Bluesky compress images?
Yes, like every network. At the time of writing, photos display at up to 4,000 pixels on the long side, and large uploads are resized and compressed.

### Can you sell art on Bluesky?
Not inside the app. Link to your shop or commission form in your bio, pinned post and image posts.

### Is Bluesky good for NSFW artists?
Bluesky allows adult art when it's labeled, and viewers who are 18 or older choose whether to see it. Profile pictures and banners must stay safe for work.
