No, TikTok isn't getting banned in the US. The 2024 law that could have banned it took effect in January 2025 but was never enforced, and on **22 January 2026** TikTok's US business was handed to **TikTok USDS Joint Venture**, a new company majority-owned by non-Chinese investors. That sale is what the law asked for, so there's no ban date coming up at the time of writing.

## The TikTok ban timeline

| Date | What happened |
| --- | --- |
| April 2024 | Congress passes a law requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok's US business or face a ban |
| 17 January 2025 | The Supreme Court upholds the law |
| 19 January 2025 | The ban takes legal effect; TikTok goes dark in the US for about a day |
| 20 January 2025 onward | President Trump signs orders delaying enforcement while a sale is negotiated |
| September 2025 | The White House approves a framework for a US joint venture |
| 22 January 2026 | The deal closes; TikTok USDS Joint Venture takes over TikTok in the US |
| March 2026 | A lawsuit challenges the government's approval of the deal |

## Why TikTok isn't banned

The law didn't ban TikTok outright. It banned app stores and hosting companies from supporting TikTok in the US unless ByteDance sold control of the US business. The joint venture is led by Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX, with ByteDance keeping 19.9%, which the government accepted as meeting that requirement. Our guide to [who owns TikTok](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/who-owns-tiktok) breaks down the new ownership.

## Is TikTok getting banned again?

Nothing currently scheduled would switch TikTok off in the US. The one open question is a lawsuit filed in March 2026 by two shareholders of rival tech companies, arguing that ByteDance still controls too much of TikTok. It asks for the deal to be renegotiated, not for TikTok to be banned, and was still pending at the time of writing. Individual states and government agencies also ban TikTok on government-issued phones, which doesn't affect personal use.

Rumors of a new ban date come back every few months, often from old articles about the 2025 deadlines. If you see one, check whether it's dated before January 2026.

## Countries where TikTok is banned

Outside the US, TikTok is blocked in a few countries and restricted in others. At the time of writing:

- **Blocked for the public:** India (since 2020), Afghanistan, Nepal has blocked and unblocked it, and China, where people use Douyin instead.
- **Banned on government devices:** many countries and institutions, including the UK, Canada, the EU's main institutions, Australia and New Zealand.
- **Temporary blocks:** several countries have blocked TikTok for weeks or months over content or elections and later restored it.

Rules change often, so check local news if you're traveling or managing an account in a specific country.

## What creators and brands should do

The ban scare taught a lot of creators a hard lesson: when TikTok went dark for a day in January 2025, accounts that only lived there lost their reach overnight. Even with the ban off the table, it's sensible to:

- **Post the same videos elsewhere.** Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts take the same vertical format. See our guide to [cross-posting to multiple platforms](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/how-to-cross-post-to-multiple-platforms).
- **Keep your original files.** Don't rely on TikTok as your only copy.
- **Point followers to somewhere you control,** like an email list or website, in your bio.

Schedule For You publishes one video to [TikTok](https://scheduleforyou.com/tiktok), Reels and Shorts from a single queue, so spreading your content out doesn't mean three times the work.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is TikTok banned in the US now?
No. TikTok works normally in the US at the time of writing, run by the TikTok USDS Joint Venture.

### Will TikTok shut down in 2026?
There's no shutdown planned. The sale that the law required closed in January 2026.

### Do I need to download a new TikTok app?
Not at the time of writing. US users kept the same app and accounts after the joint venture took over. Keep the app updated, as usual.

### Why was TikTok going to be banned?
US lawmakers worried that the Chinese government could access American users' data or influence what TikTok recommends through ByteDance. The law required a sale to non-Chinese owners to address that.

### Is TikTok banned in other countries?
Yes, in a few, including India, and on government devices in many more. China doesn't have TikTok at all; it has Douyin.
