To post a video to YouTube as a Short with Schedule For You, upload a vertical or square video that's 3 minutes or shorter, add a title (from the title field or the first line of your caption), choose public, unlisted or private, and pick a time. Schedule For You uploads it as a normal YouTube video, and YouTube itself decides whether it counts as a Short based on its shape and length.

There's no special "Shorts" switch to flip. This guide explains how YouTube classifies Shorts, how to set up the upload, and how to post the same clip to Reels and TikTok at the same time.

## What makes a video a YouTube Short

YouTube doesn't have a separate upload type for Shorts. It looks at the video you upload and treats it as a Short when it meets two conditions, at the time of writing:

| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Shape | Vertical (taller than it is wide) or square |
| Length | Up to 3 minutes |
| Recommended size | 1080×1920 (9:16) |
| Title | Up to 100 characters |
| Description | Up to 5,000 characters |
| Hashtag #Shorts | Optional |

A horizontal video stays a regular video regardless of length, and a vertical video longer than 3 minutes is treated as a regular long-form upload. YouTube has changed these rules before, so check [YouTube's help center](https://support.google.com/youtube) if you're working near the limits.

### Do you need #Shorts in the title?

No. Adding #Shorts to the title or description is optional. YouTube classifies Shorts by the video's shape and length, not by the hashtag. Some creators still add it as a label for viewers, which does no harm, but it uses up characters in your title.

## Before you post a video to YouTube as a Short

You'll need:

- **A YouTube channel connected to Schedule For You.** Open the Accounts screen, choose YouTube and sign in with the Google account that manages your channel, then approve the permissions requested.
- **A finished vertical or square video.** Export at 1080×1920 if you can. A video is required for every YouTube post.
- **A title.** Keep it under 100 characters. Shorter titles are easier to read on a phone screen.

If you're making one vertical video for several platforms, the size is the same for TikTok and Instagram Reels. See our guide to [TikTok video size and ratio](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/tiktok-video-size-ratio) for export settings.

## How to schedule YouTube Shorts step by step

1. **Open the composer.** Start a new post in the workspace connected to your channel.
2. **Select your YouTube channel.** Add other accounts too if you want to cross-post (more on this below).
3. **Upload your video.** Add the vertical or square clip, 3 minutes or shorter, or pick it from the media library.
4. **Add a title.** Type it in the title field. If you leave the field empty, Schedule For You uses the first line of your caption as the title, so make that line work as a title. Either way, the limit is 100 characters.
5. **Write the description.** The rest of the caption becomes the video's description, up to 5,000 characters. Add context, credits and any links. Add #Shorts here if you like.
6. **Choose privacy.** Pick public, unlisted or private. Public is what most people want for Shorts. Unlisted is useful for a test or a client review.
7. **Pick a time.** Set a date and time, add the post to your queue, or drag it onto the calendar.
8. **Schedule.** At the scheduled time, Schedule For You publishes the video to your channel with the settings you chose.

After it's published, YouTube processes the video. It can take a little while before it appears in the Shorts feed, and YouTube's own systems decide where it's shown.

### Writing a title that works for Shorts

Shorts are watched quickly, so a title that says what happens in a few words does better than a clever one. Some practical tips:

- Put the main topic in the first few words.
- Keep it well under 100 characters so it isn't cut off on small screens.
- Avoid ALL CAPS and strings of punctuation.
- Use a number when it fits ("3 ways to…").

Our free [YouTube title checker](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/youtube-title-checker) runs a title through a simple checklist covering length, keyword position, numbers and punctuation.

## Cross-posting the same clip to Reels and TikTok

Most short-form creators publish the same vertical clip to YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and TikTok. You can do this in one post:

1. **Select all three accounts** in the composer: YouTube, Instagram and TikTok.
2. **Upload the video once.** One video on Instagram is posted as a Reel. On TikTok, it's posted as a video, and you choose the privacy setting (public, friends or only me) for that post.
3. **Tailor each caption.** Open each platform's version and edit it separately. YouTube needs a title (field or first line); Instagram allows up to 2,200 characters; TikTok captions can be longer at the time of writing.
4. **Check the character counts.** Live limit checks flag any version that's too long.
5. **Schedule.** All three publish from one post, at the same time.

### Things to adjust per platform

| | YouTube Shorts | Instagram Reels | TikTok |
|---|---|---|---|
| Title | Required (field or first line), up to 100 characters | No separate title | No separate title |
| Caption | Becomes the description, up to 5,000 | Up to 2,200 characters | Up to 4,000 characters (at the time of writing) |
| Privacy | Public, unlisted, private | Public post | Public, friends, only me |
| Length limit | Up to 3 minutes to count as a Short | Check Instagram's current Reel limits | Check TikTok's current limits |

If your clip has visible watermarks or end screens from another app, remove them before uploading. Clean exports usually look better on every platform. For Instagram sizing details, see our guide to [Instagram Reel size](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/reel-size-instagram).

## Troubleshooting

### My video was posted as a regular video, not a Short

Check the shape and length. A video that's wider than it is tall, or longer than 3 minutes, won't be treated as a Short. Also check your export settings: if your editor places a vertical clip inside a horizontal 16:9 frame with black bars on the sides, YouTube sees a horizontal video. Export at 9:16 instead.

### The title isn't what I expected

If the title field is empty, the first line of your caption becomes the title. Fill in the title field, or rewrite the first line, and keep it under 100 characters.

### The post failed

YouTube connections can be revoked, for example if you change your Google password or remove the app's access in your Google account. Schedule For You sends a failed-post alert when a post fails. Reconnect YouTube from the Accounts screen and reschedule the post.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is there a Shorts toggle in Schedule For You?

No. Schedule For You uploads a normal video, and YouTube decides whether it's a Short based on its shape and length. A vertical or square video of up to 3 minutes is treated as a Short at the time of writing.

### How do I post a video to YouTube as a Short instead of a regular video?

Export it vertical (ideally 9:16) or square and keep it to 3 minutes or less at the time of writing, then upload it as usual. YouTube classifies it automatically. A horizontal video, or a vertical clip placed inside a 16:9 frame with black bars, stays a regular video.

### Do I need to add #Shorts to the title?

No, it's optional. YouTube classifies Shorts by the video's format, not the hashtag. Add it if you like it as a label for viewers.

### How long can a YouTube Short be?

At the time of writing, up to 3 minutes. Anything longer is treated as a regular video, even if it's vertical.

### Can I schedule a Short as unlisted or private?

Yes. You can choose public, unlisted or private for each YouTube post in Schedule For You.

### Can I post the same video to YouTube, Instagram and TikTok at once?

Yes. Select all three accounts, upload the video once, tailor each platform's caption and schedule. Instagram publishes it as a Reel, TikTok as a video and YouTube as an upload that YouTube can classify as a Short.
