"Shared with you" on TikTok usually means **someone sent that video to you**, or, when it appears on an account, that **you and that person have shared videos with each other** in direct messages. TikTok uses the label to explain why it's showing you something. It doesn't mean your account was shared publicly, and it doesn't tell anyone else what you watched.

TikTok hasn't published a detailed explanation of the label, so the meanings below come from how it appears in the app. It can vary by version and region.

## Where you see "Shared with you" and what it means

| Where it appears | Most likely meaning |
| --- | --- |
| On a video in your feed or inbox | A friend sent you this video in a message |
| Under a name in **Suggested accounts** or **Find friends** | You've exchanged videos with this account in DMs, or they've shared with you |
| On a profile you don't recognize | TikTok links the account to you through shares, contacts or mutual connections |

The label is a reason, like "Friends with" or "From your contacts." TikTok shows these reasons so suggestions feel less random.

## Why is it showing an account I don't know?

This is the confusing case. A few things can cause it:

- **Old shares.** Someone sent you a video months ago, or you sent them one, and you've forgotten.
- **A new or renamed account.** A person you've messaged changed their username or profile photo.
- **Contacts and Facebook friends.** If you've synced contacts, TikTok may suggest accounts tied to phone numbers in your address book.
- **Shared links.** Opening a TikTok link someone sent outside the app can also count as a share.

It doesn't mean that person can see your watch history or is tracking you.

## How to stop seeing "Shared with you" suggestions

You can't turn off the label itself, but you can reduce suggestions:

1. Go to **Profile > menu (three lines) > Settings and privacy > Privacy**.
2. Tap **Suggest your account to others** and turn off the options you don't want (contacts, Facebook friends, mutual connections, people who open or send links to you).
3. To remove a single suggestion, tap the **X** next to it in Suggested accounts.
4. To stop syncing contacts, turn off contact access in **Settings and privacy > Privacy > Sync contacts and Facebook friends** and remove synced contacts.

## Using shares to your advantage

Shares are one of the strongest signals on TikTok: a video that people send to friends tends to keep travelling. If you post for a brand or as a creator, make videos worth sending (a useful tip, a relatable moment, a clear "send this to someone who…" prompt) and post when your audience is active. Schedule For You queues TikTok videos and photo posts for your best times and can send the same video to Reels and Shorts. ## Frequently asked questions

No. The label is only shown to you.

No. "Friends with" means you have mutual friends; "Shared with you" points to video sharing between you and that account.
