YouTube starts paying you once three things are true: your channel has been accepted into the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), you've linked an AdSense for YouTube account, and your finalized earnings have reached the payment threshold. Earnings for each month are finalized early the following month and paid out later that month, so in practice your first payment usually arrives one to two months after you start earning, and later if your balance is still below the threshold.

Below is the full path, from meeting the requirements to money in your bank account.

## Quick answer: the path to your first YouTube payment

| Step | What happens | Typical timing (at the time of writing) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1. Become eligible | Reach the subscriber and watch-time or Shorts-view thresholds | Depends on your channel |
| 2. Apply | Accept the YPP terms and link AdSense for YouTube in YouTube Studio | Same day |
| 3. Review | YouTube reviews your channel against its policies | Often about a month, sometimes longer |
| 4. Earn | Monetization is turned on and ads can run on your videos | From acceptance onward |
| 5. Finalize | Last month's estimated earnings are finalized and added to your AdSense balance | Early the following month |
| 6. Get paid | AdSense issues payment if your balance is over the threshold | Around the 21st–26th of that month |

Timing varies, and YouTube doesn't guarantee review times. The official details are in [YouTube Help](https://support.google.com/youtube).

## Step 1: Meet the Partner Program requirements

YPP has two levels at the time of writing. Both require you to live in a country where the program is available.

| Level | Subscribers | Plus one of | What it unlocks |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Fan funding tier | 500 | 3,000 public watch hours in 12 months, or 3 million public Shorts views in 90 days (plus 3 public uploads in the last 90 days) | Channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, some shopping features |
| Full ad revenue sharing | 1,000 | 4,000 public watch hours in 12 months, or 10 million public Shorts views in 90 days | Ad revenue on long-form videos and Shorts, plus fan funding |

The lower tier isn't available in every YPP country, so check what YouTube Studio shows for your channel.

### Other conditions

- Follow YouTube's channel monetization policies, including the Community Guidelines.
- Have no active Community Guidelines strikes.
- Turn on 2-Step Verification for the Google account that owns the channel.
- Have, or be ready to create, one AdSense for YouTube account. Each person can have only one.

You can track your progress in YouTube Studio under **Earn**, which shows how close you are to each threshold. If you're working toward the Shorts-views route, our guide to [posting YouTube Shorts](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/post-youtube-shorts) explains how YouTube classifies a Short.

## Step 2: Apply and link AdSense

Once you're eligible:

1. Open **YouTube Studio** and click **Earn** in the left menu.
2. Click **Apply** (or **Get started**) and review and accept the base terms.
3. Click **Start** next to the AdSense step. You'll be sent to AdSense to sign in with a Google account and create or link your AdSense for YouTube account.
4. Return to YouTube Studio. Your application now goes into review.

If your channel isn't accepted, YouTube tells you which policies it was reviewed against. At the time of writing, you can usually reapply after 30 days once you've fixed the issues. Use that time to review your content against the monetization policies, especially reused or repetitive content.

## Step 3: Understand YouTube's monthly payment cycle

Being accepted doesn't mean money arrives right away. YouTube pays through AdSense on a monthly cycle.

### Earnings are estimated first, then finalized

During the month, YouTube Studio shows **estimated** revenue. Early the next month, those earnings are finalized and added to your AdSense balance. The finalized amount can differ slightly from the estimate, for example after YouTube removes invalid traffic.

### Payments go out once a month

If your AdSense balance is above the payment threshold after finalization, AdSense issues a payment, typically between the 21st and 26th of the month at the time of writing. Depending on your bank and payment method, it can take several more days to arrive.

### The payment threshold

AdSense only pays once your balance reaches the payment threshold. In the US it's $100 at the time of writing, and it varies by currency. If you earn less than that in a month, your balance carries over until it reaches the threshold. A new channel earning small amounts may wait several months for its first payment.

## Step 4: Clear the payment holds

Several one-time checks can hold your payment even when you've earned enough. Clear them as early as you can.

1. **Verify your address.** When your balance reaches a lower verification threshold, AdSense mails a PIN to your payment address. You enter it in AdSense to unlock payments.
2. **Verify your identity.** AdSense may ask you to confirm your name and address.
3. **Submit tax information.** Every monetizing creator must provide US tax info in AdSense, even outside the US, because Google may withhold tax on earnings from US viewers. Missing tax info can lead to higher withholding.
4. **Add a payment method**, such as a bank account, and make sure the name matches your AdSense account.

Payment holds are shown on the AdSense home page, so check it after you're accepted.

## A hypothetical first-payment timeline

Here's how the dates might fall for an imaginary channel. The dates and amounts are invented for illustration.

- **March 10:** the channel is accepted into YPP and ads start running.
- **March 10–31:** it earns about $70 in estimated revenue.
- **Early April:** March earnings are finalized at $68 and added to the balance. That's under the $100 threshold, so no payment is issued in April.
- **April:** it earns another $60.
- **Early May:** April earnings are finalized. The balance is now $128.
- **Around May 21–26:** AdSense issues the first payment, assuming the PIN, tax info and bank details are done.

So this channel was accepted in March and paid in late May. A channel earning more per month could be paid in April instead. To estimate what your views might bring in, see [how much YouTube pays for 1,000 views](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/how-much-does-youtube-pay-for-1000-views).

## Why your first YouTube payment might be late

- Your balance hasn't reached the payment threshold yet.
- You haven't entered the address verification PIN.
- Tax info or identity verification is incomplete.
- No payment method is set up, or bank details don't match.
- Your channel was accepted late in the month, so the first month's earnings are small.
- Your channel was demonetized or had monetization paused during a review.

## What doesn't get paid

- **Views before you joined YPP.** There's no back pay for views earned before monetization was turned on.
- **Videos with ads turned off** or not suitable for most advertisers.
- **Invalid traffic**, such as purchased views or automated clicks. It gets removed before earnings are finalized and can risk your YPP status.

## How to reach eligibility sooner

Watch hours and Shorts views add up faster when you publish on a regular schedule. A few habits help:

- Plan uploads in batches and release them on a predictable rhythm.
- Write titles that clearly say what the video delivers; the [YouTube title checker](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/youtube-title-checker) gives you a quick checklist.
- Turn your best long videos into Shorts that point back to the full version.

Schedule For You can upload and schedule your YouTube videos with their titles, descriptions and privacy settings, alongside posts for your other social channels. It doesn't handle monetization or analytics; YouTube Studio and AdSense remain the place for those.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long after monetization does YouTube pay you?

Usually one to two months. Earnings for a month are finalized early the next month and paid around the 21st–26th, at the time of writing, as long as your balance is above the payment threshold and there are no payment holds.

### Does YouTube pay you for views before monetization?

No. You only earn from ads and other features once your channel is in YPP and monetization is active. Earlier views help you qualify but aren't paid retroactively.

### What is the minimum payout on YouTube?

YouTube pays through AdSense, which has a payment threshold. It's $100 in the US at the time of writing and varies by currency. Smaller balances roll over to the next month.

### Can I get paid by YouTube without AdSense?

No. AdSense for YouTube is how YPP creators are paid. You link it when you apply, and it holds your balance, tax info and payment method.

### Do I need 1,000 subscribers to make money on YouTube?

Not for every feature. At the time of writing, the fan funding tier opens at 500 subscribers in available countries and unlocks memberships and Super Thanks. Ad revenue sharing requires 1,000 subscribers plus the watch-hour or Shorts-view threshold.
