Instagram doesn't have a button that lists people who don't follow you back, but you can find out safely. Download your followers and following lists through Instagram's **Download your information** tool, then compare them, either with our free in-browser [Instagram unfollowers checker](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/instagram-unfollowers-checker) or by hand. None of this requires giving your password to another app.

Below are the step-by-step instructions for the data download, how to use the checker, a manual method for small accounts, and why the popular "unfollower tracker" apps are a bad idea.

## Quick answer: your options

| Method | Best for | Needs your password? |
|---|---|---|
| Download your information + our unfollowers checker | Any size of account | No (the file stays in your browser) |
| Download your information + compare by hand | Smaller accounts, spreadsheet fans | No |
| Manual check in the app | A few specific accounts | No |
| "Least interacted with" in your Following list | Tidying up who you follow | No |
| Third-party tracker apps that log in as you | Not recommended | Yes, and that's the problem |

## Step 1: Download your followers and following lists

Instagram lets you export your own account data, including the full lists of who follows you and who you follow. Menu labels shift between app versions, so look for the closest match if something is worded slightly differently.

1. Open Instagram and go to your profile.
2. Tap the menu icon in the top corner, then **Accounts Center**.
3. Tap **Your information and permissions**.
4. Tap **Download your information**, then choose to download or transfer information.
5. Select your Instagram account.
6. Choose **Some of your information** rather than everything, so the file is small and quick to prepare.
7. Under connections, tick **Followers and following**. Leave everything else unticked.
8. Choose to download to your device.
9. Set the date range to **All time**, the format to **JSON**, and confirm.
10. Submit the request.

Instagram prepares the file and notifies you when it's ready, often by email and in the same Download your information screen. For a small export this can be quick, but it can take longer, so check back. Download the file before the link expires.

### What's in the file

You'll get a zip file. Inside, look for a folder about connections and another for followers and following. The two files you need are usually named something like `followers_1.json` and `following.json`. Large accounts may have several numbered followers files.

You don't need to open them yourself. If you're curious, JSON is plain text, so any text editor will show the usernames.

### JSON or HTML?

Either works with our checker. JSON is the better choice if you might also want to work with the data in a spreadsheet or another tool, while HTML is easier to read in a browser. If you've already requested HTML, you don't need to request again.

## Step 2: Compare the lists with the unfollowers checker

Our [Instagram unfollowers checker](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/instagram-unfollowers-checker) does the comparison for you, entirely in your browser.

1. Unzip the file you downloaded from Instagram.
2. Open the unfollowers checker.
3. Select your followers file (or files) and your following file.
4. The tool lists accounts you follow that don't follow you back, plus "fans": people who follow you that you don't follow back.
5. Each username links to the profile, so you can review it on Instagram and decide what to do.

There's no login and no password, and the files aren't uploaded anywhere. The comparison runs on your device, and when you close the tab, it's gone.

### Keep in mind

- **It's a snapshot.** The results reflect the date of your export, not live data. If someone followed you after you downloaded the file, they'll still show up as not following back. Request a fresh export when you want an up-to-date picture.
- **Usernames can change.** If someone renamed their account after the export, the profile link may not work. Search for them by name instead.
- **Deactivated accounts** may appear in your following list but not in your followers list, because they're hidden at the moment.

## Manual checking for small accounts

If you follow a few dozen people, or you only care about a handful of accounts, you can check by hand.

### Check one account at a time

1. Open the profile of the person you want to check.
2. Look near the Follow button. If they follow you, Instagram typically shows a **Follows you** label on their profile.
3. Alternatively, open their **Following** list and search for your username. If you appear, they follow you.

This last step only works if their account is public or you follow them and they've accepted.

### Use your own lists

1. Go to your profile and tap **Followers** to see who follows you.
2. Switch to the **Following** tab to see who you follow.
3. For each account in Following, use the search bar on the Followers tab to see if they appear.

It's slow for large accounts, which is why the data download is the better route once you follow more than a few dozen people.

### Compare in a spreadsheet

If you like spreadsheets, open the JSON files in a text editor, copy the usernames into two columns, and use a lookup formula to flag names in "following" that don't appear in "followers." It takes some setup, but it gives you the same result as the checker.

## Use "Least interacted with" to tidy your Following list

Instagram has its own built-in sorting that helps you clean up who you follow, even without comparing lists.

1. Go to your profile and tap **Following**.
2. At the top, look for categories such as **Least interacted with** and **Most shown in feed**.
3. Open **Least interacted with** to see accounts you rarely like, comment on or view.
4. Tap **Following** next to any account to unfollow it, if you want to.

This doesn't tell you who follows you back, but it's often what people actually want: a shorter, more relevant feed. It's also completely within the app, so there's no data to download.

## Why you should avoid unfollower tracker apps

Search any app store for "unfollowers" and you'll find dozens of apps promising instant results. Most of them want you to log in with your Instagram username and password. Here's why that's a risk.

- **You hand over full control.** With your password, an app can post, message, follow and change settings as you. You're trusting a developer you know nothing about.
- **It can trigger security checks or worse.** Logins from unfamiliar servers, and automated activity on your account, can look like a takeover. That can lead to locked logins, action restrictions or, in serious cases, a disabled account. If that happens, see our guide to the [disabled account appeal](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/instagram-disabled-account-appeal).
- **It breaks Instagram's terms.** Instagram's rules prohibit accessing accounts through unauthorized automated means.
- **Your data may be sold or leaked.** Some of these apps make their money from the data they collect.
- **Many push paid subscriptions** for features you can get free from your own data export.

If you've used one of these apps in the past, change your Instagram password, turn on two-factor authentication, and remove any apps you don't recognize in your security settings.

## Should you unfollow people who don't follow back?

That's up to you, and there's no penalty either way. A few things to consider:

- **Not everyone follows back, and that's normal.** Brands, news outlets, creators and celebrities rarely follow their audience.
- **Unfollowing in big batches** in a short time can look like spam and may get your actions limited. Spread it out.
- **Following is about what you want to see.** If an account is useful or enjoyable, it doesn't matter whether it follows you.

If your goal is growth, the bigger lever is posting consistently with content people want to share. Scheduling feed posts, Reels and carousels ahead with a tool like Schedule For You keeps you visible on a steady rhythm, without relying on follow-for-follow.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I see who doesn't follow me back on Instagram without an app?

Yes. Download your followers and following lists through Accounts Center, then compare them. Our free in-browser checker does the comparison without any login, or you can check by hand for small accounts.

### Does Instagram notify people when I check if they follow me?

No. Downloading your data, viewing someone's profile, or looking through their Following list doesn't send a notification.

### How long does Instagram take to prepare my followers file?

It varies. A small export limited to followers and following is often ready fairly quickly, but it can take longer. Instagram tells you when it's ready, and you should download it before the link expires.

### Are unfollower tracker apps safe?

Apps that ask for your Instagram password aren't safe. They get full access to your account, can trigger security checks or restrictions, and break Instagram's terms. Use the official data download instead.

### Why does someone show as not following me back when they do?

Your export is a snapshot. If they followed you after you downloaded the file, or they deactivated and reactivated their account, the lists won't match. Request a fresh export to update.
