Why can't you post on Facebook (FB)? The cause is usually one of a handful of things: a glitch in the app or browser, a restriction on your account, missing permissions on a Page, rules set by a Group's admins, a temporary limit for posting too fast, or a link that Facebook blocks. Less often, Facebook itself is having problems. Start by checking **Account Status** in your settings, then work through the causes below.

The fix depends on where Facebook won't let you post (your profile, a Page or a Group) and what you see when it fails. The table below helps you narrow it down.

## Quick answer: why you can't post on Facebook, by symptom

| What you see | Likely cause | Where to look |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The Post button does nothing, or the app freezes | App or browser glitch | Update or reinstall the app; try another browser |
| "You can't post right now" or "You're temporarily blocked" | Spam-related limit or restriction | Account Status in Settings |
| No option to post as your Page | Missing Page access or wrong profile selected | Page settings → Page access |
| Your Group post says "pending" | Admin approval is required | The Group's rules and your pending posts |
| No box to write in a Group | Admins have turned off member posts, or you're muted | Group rules; contact an admin |
| A message that your post goes against Community Standards | Blocked content or link | The notice itself; Account Status |
| Nobody can post, including friends | A Facebook outage | Wait and try again later |

## Cause 1: An app or browser problem

Many posting failures aren't about your account at all. Try these in order:

1. **Restart the app** or refresh the page.
2. **Update the Facebook app** from the App Store or Google Play.
3. **Clear the app's cache** (Android: Settings → Apps → Facebook → Storage) or **clear cookies and cache** for facebook.com in your browser.
4. **Try a different device or browser.** If it works on a computer but not your phone, the problem is local.
5. **Turn off browser extensions** such as ad blockers or script blockers, which can break the post composer.
6. **Check your connection.** Large photos and videos can time out on weak mobile data. Try Wi-Fi.
7. **Reduce the upload.** If a video fails, try a shorter or smaller file to see whether size is the issue.

## Cause 2: Your account has a restriction

Facebook can temporarily stop you from posting, commenting or using certain features if it believes you broke its Community Standards or behaved like spam.

### How to check Account Status

1. Open the Facebook menu and go to **Settings & privacy → Settings**.
2. Find **Account Status** (at the time of writing it appears near the top of settings; Facebook moves it occasionally, so use the settings search if needed).
3. Review any removed content, restrictions and how long they last.

If you disagree with a decision, Account Status usually shows a **Request review** or **Disagree with decision** option. Use that official route. Reviews take varying amounts of time and nothing guarantees a reversal.

### For Pages and businesses

Pages and ad accounts have their own health screens. For a Page, look for **Page status** or **Account quality** in Meta Business Suite or the Business Support Home. Restrictions on a Page can stop you posting even when your personal profile is fine.

## Cause 3: You don't have the right role on a Page

If you manage a Facebook Page, you can only post if you have the right level of access.

- **Switch to the Page profile.** In the newer Pages experience, you post by switching from your personal profile to the Page from your profile menu. Posting while still in your personal profile won't publish as the Page.
- **Check your access.** Ask an admin to open the Page's **Settings → Page setup → Page access** and confirm you have Facebook access with permission to create content, or the matching task access in Meta Business Suite.
- **Check for an expired invite.** If you were invited to manage the Page, accept the invitation from your notifications first.

If you use a scheduling tool, the same permissions apply. Schedule For You publishes to Facebook Pages (not personal profiles or Groups) and needs the person who connects the Page to have posting access. If a post fails because Facebook revoked access, for example after a password change, you'll get a failed-post alert and can reconnect the Page from the Accounts screen. Our guide to [connecting a Facebook Page](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/connect-facebook-page) walks through the permissions.

## Cause 4: Group rules or admin approval

Groups are run by their admins, who can control who posts and when.

- **Post approval is on.** Your post sits in a "pending" state until an admin approves it. Check **Your content** or **Pending posts** in the Group.
- **Member posting is off.** Some Groups only let admins post, or only allow posts on certain days.
- **New-member waiting periods.** Admins can stop new members from posting for a while after joining.
- **You've been muted or restricted.** Admins can temporarily stop you from posting or commenting in that Group.
- **Your post broke a Group rule.** Read the rules in the Group's About section, which often limit links, promotions or certain topics.

If you're unsure, message one of the Group's admins or moderators politely. Only they can change Group-level settings.

## Cause 5: Spam limits for posting too fast

Facebook limits activity that looks automated or spammy. You might see a "temporarily blocked" message if you:

- Post the same message in many Groups in a short time.
- Share lots of links rapidly.
- Send many friend requests or messages to people you don't know.
- Tag lots of people who don't interact with you.

These blocks usually expire after a period of time stated in the notice. Waiting it out is often the only fix. Avoid repeating the behavior, and spread your posting out.

## Cause 6: A blocked or flagged link

If the problem only happens when you include a particular link, Facebook may be blocking that site. You'll often see a message that the content goes against the Community Standards or looks like spam.

- **Remove the link and try again.** If the post goes through, the link was the problem.
- **Check the destination.** Link shorteners, recently hacked sites and some redirect services are commonly blocked.
- **Fix your own site.** If it's your website that's blocked, make sure it's secure and not hosting malware, then use the review option Facebook offers in the notice.

For the right way to add links to different post types, see our guide to [adding links to a Facebook post](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/add-links-to-facebook-post).

## Cause 7: The post is too long or the media isn't supported

Facebook posts can be up to 63,206 characters, so text length is rarely the issue. Media causes more trouble: unsupported file types, very large videos or corrupted files can fail to upload. Re-export the file in a common format, such as MP4 for video and JPG or PNG for images, and try again.

## Cause 8: A Facebook outage

Sometimes Facebook simply isn't working for anyone. Signs include feeds that won't load, messages that won't send and friends reporting the same problem. There's nothing to fix on your side: wait and try again later. Meta publishes status information for businesses and developers, and the news usually covers major outages quickly.

## Cause 9: Your account is hacked or locked

If you see unfamiliar posts, can't change your settings or get logged out repeatedly, your account may be compromised. Go to the [Facebook Help Center](https://www.facebook.com/help) and use the official hacked-account process. Don't pay "recovery services", don't share your password or login codes with anyone who contacts you, and be wary of messages claiming your account will be deleted unless you click a link.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why can't I post on Facebook all of a sudden?

The most common reasons are an app glitch, a temporary block for activity that looks like spam, or a restriction after a post was flagged. Check Account Status in Settings & privacy, update the app, and try posting from a different device.

### Why does Facebook say I can't post right now?

That message usually means a temporary limit on your account, often after activity that looked like spam, such as sharing the same link in many places quickly. The notice or Account Status normally says how long it lasts. Wait it out and spread your posting more evenly afterward.

### How do I know if Facebook has restricted my account?

Go to Settings & privacy → Settings → Account Status. It shows any content that was removed, current restrictions and how long they last, along with an option to request a review if you disagree.

### Why can't I post in a Facebook Group?

The Group's admins may require approval for new posts, allow only admins to post, have a waiting period for new members, or have muted you. Check the Group's rules and your pending posts, or contact an admin.

### Why can't I post as my Facebook Page?

You may still be posting as your personal profile, or you may not have permission to create content on the Page. Switch to the Page profile, and ask an admin to check Page access in the Page's settings.

### How long does a Facebook posting block last?

It depends on the reason. Temporary blocks for spam-like activity often show an end date or duration in the notice. Facebook doesn't publish fixed lengths, and repeated issues can lead to longer restrictions.

### Can a scheduling tool post to Facebook Groups or profiles?

It depends on the tool. Schedule For You posts to Facebook Pages only, not personal profiles or Groups. For Groups, you'll need to post in Facebook itself and follow each Group's rules.
