A YouTube shadowban is when your videos, comments or live chat messages stop reaching people without a clear notice. YouTube doesn't use the word "shadowban", and it doesn't have one hidden, site-wide switch. What people experience is usually one of three things: a **strike or lost feature** shown in YouTube Studio, **comments held for review or hidden by a particular channel**, or a plain **drop in impressions**. Start by checking YouTube Studio for notices, then test your comments in a private window.

This guide covers each kind of YouTube shadow ban, how to test for it, and who can actually lift it.

## What people mean by a YouTube shadowban

"Shadow banned on YouTube" gets used for very different situations:

- **Your comments vanish for everyone else.** You can see your comment, but logged-out viewers and other users can't.
- **Your live chat messages don't show** to others in a stream, even though they appear on your screen.
- **Your videos don't appear in search** or get far fewer impressions than usual.
- **Your channel lost features** such as uploading, live streaming or custom thumbnails.

The first two are almost always decided by the channel you're commenting on, not by YouTube as a whole. The last one comes with a notice. Only the third is truly ambiguous, and it's usually not a restriction at all.

## Check YouTube Studio first

If YouTube has taken action on your own channel, it tells you. At the time of writing, look in three places:

1. **The YouTube Studio dashboard.** Community Guidelines warnings, strikes and copyright strikes appear here with the video and policy named.
2. **Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility.** This shows which features your channel can use and whether any are limited.
3. **The email linked to your channel.** YouTube sends notices for removals, strikes and age restrictions. Only trust messages from YouTube's own domains, and never enter your password from an unexpected link.

If Studio shows no warnings, no strikes and full feature eligibility, YouTube hasn't restricted your channel. Anything else you're seeing is either channel-level moderation or normal variation in reach.

## Comments shadowban on YouTube: held, filtered or hidden

This is the most common complaint, and it has several causes that look identical from your side.

### Held for review

Channel owners can turn on settings that hold comments before they're published, for example holding potentially inappropriate comments, comments with links, or comments containing blocked words they've listed. A held comment shows to you but not to anyone else until the owner approves it. Many never get reviewed.

### YouTube's spam filter

YouTube also filters comments it thinks are spam, which can send them to the channel's "Likely spam" folder or remove them. Comments with links, repeated text you've posted on many videos, or bursts of comments in a short time are the usual triggers.

### Hidden users on a channel

A channel owner or moderator can choose to hide a user from the channel. After that, every comment you post there is invisible to everyone but you. It shows up in the channel's **Hidden users** list in their YouTube Studio settings, and it applies **per channel**, not across YouTube. Your comments on other channels are unaffected.

### How to test your comments in a private window

1. Post a normal comment, without a link, on a video.
2. Open the same video in a private or incognito window where you're not logged in.
3. Sort comments by **Newest first** and look for yours. Give it a minute or two.
4. Repeat on two or three different channels.

If your comment is missing on one channel but visible on others, that channel is holding or hiding you. If it's missing everywhere, your comments are probably being caught by YouTube's spam filter; cut back on links, repeated text and rapid posting.

## Did YouTube shadowban me from stream chats?

Probably not YouTube itself. In live chat, a channel's moderators can **hide a user on the channel** or put them in a **timeout**, and those actions are per channel. A hidden user still sees their own messages, which is why it feels like a shadowban. Live chats can also run their own blocked-word lists and hold messages, and some channels limit chat to subscribers or members.

To test, ask a friend in the same stream whether they can see your messages, then try another channel's stream. If you're visible elsewhere, the first channel's moderators made the call. If chat is missing everywhere or you can't type at all, check Studio and your email for a notice about your own account.

## YouTube shadowban checker: how to test it yourself

There's no official YouTube shadowban checker, and no outside site can see how YouTube ranks or filters your account. What you can do is run the same tests consistently. Our free [shadowban checker](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/shadowban-checker) is a guided self-test: pick YouTube, optionally enter your handle to fill in a logged-out YouTube search for it, then answer yes or no to five checks:

- Does YouTube Studio show a strike, a warning or a lost feature?
- Do your channel and a recent video appear in a logged-out search?
- Do your comments on other channels disappear for logged-out viewers?
- Do your live chat messages show for you but not for others?
- Did impressions fall sharply on several new videos?

It gives a plain-language verdict and treats a Studio notice as the deciding answer. It runs in your browser and doesn't send anything anywhere.

## YouTube shadowban extensions: what they really do

You'll find browser extensions that claim to detect a YouTube comment shadowban, often by adding a "check" button next to your comments or in live chat. The most they can do is the private-window test above, automated: they reload the comments as a logged-out visitor and report whether yours appears. That can save time, but it can't tell you **why** a comment is missing, whether it's held, filtered or hidden, and it can't see YouTube's systems.

Be careful with what you install. Extensions that read pages you visit can see a lot. Don't give any extension or website your Google password, and don't sign in to YouTube through a third party to "scan" your account. We don't recommend any specific extension; the manual test takes two minutes and is just as reliable.

## Why your videos might be getting fewer views

If Studio is clear and your comments show, a feeling of being shadowbanned usually comes from reach:

- **Lower click-through rate.** Fewer people clicking your thumbnail means fewer impressions next time. Compare impressions and click-through rate in YouTube Analytics across similar videos.
- **Weaker retention.** Videos that lose viewers early get recommended less.
- **Search results take time.** New videos can take a while to appear for their exact title; check again after a day.
- **Reused or repetitive content.** Channels that mainly reupload other people's material can be limited, especially for monetization.
- **Age restrictions.** Age-restricted videos aren't shown to signed-out viewers or younger users, and get far less reach.
- **Misleading metadata.** Titles, tags or thumbnails that don't match the video break YouTube's spam policies. Our [YouTube title checker](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/youtube-title-checker) scores a title on length, keyword placement, caps and punctuation so it stays clear and honest.

Posting time matters less than these, but publishing when your audience is active helps a video's first hours; see the [best time to post on YouTube](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/best-time-to-post-on-youtube).

Schedule For You publishes your own videos and Shorts to YouTube through the official API at the times you choose. Scheduling doesn't cause a restriction, and it won't fix one either.

## Can you contact YouTube to remove a shadowban?

It depends on what's going on.

- **Strikes and warnings:** yes, through an appeal. In YouTube Studio, open the strike or removal notice and choose to appeal. You'll get a decision by email. At the time of writing, Community Guidelines strikes expire after a period YouTube sets, and the notice tells you when.
- **Lost features or a channel-wide limit:** use the YouTube Help Center and the appeal link in the notice. Some creators can also reach YouTube's Creator support team by chat or email from YouTube Studio's help menu; whether that's offered depends on your channel's eligibility, such as being in the YouTube Partner Program.
- **Comments held or hidden on a channel:** no. YouTube can't overrule a channel's own moderation. Only that channel's owner or moderators can approve held comments or remove you from their hidden users list, so a polite message to the creator (by their listed business email or social links) is the only route.
- **Spam-filtered comments:** there's no appeal form. Change the pattern: fewer links, no repeated text, and slower commenting.
- **Lower impressions with no notice:** there's nothing to remove. Work on titles, thumbnails and retention instead.

Anyone who offers to "remove your YouTube shadowban" for money or asks for your login is running a scam.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does YouTube shadowban channels?

YouTube doesn't use the term and doesn't run a hidden site-wide ban. It can issue strikes, remove features, age-restrict videos and filter spam comments, and it tells you about the first three in YouTube Studio and by email. Individual channels can also hide users from their own comments and chats.

### Why can't anyone see my YouTube comments?

Your comment is probably held for review, caught by YouTube's spam filter, or you've been hidden on that channel. Test it by opening the video in a private window and sorting by newest. Missing on one channel only means that channel's settings; missing everywhere usually means spam filtering.

### How do I know if I'm shadowbanned in YouTube live chat?

Ask someone in the same stream if they can see your messages, then try another channel's stream. Moderators can hide a user or put them in timeout on their own channel, which only affects that channel.

### Do YouTube shadowban extensions work?

They can automate a logged-out visibility check for your comments, and that's all. They can't see YouTube's systems or tell you why a comment is missing. Never give an extension or website your account password.

### How do I contact YouTube to remove a shadowban?

Appeal strikes and removals from the notice in YouTube Studio, and use YouTube's Help Center or Creator support if your channel is eligible for it. A channel that has hidden you is the only one that can unhide you; YouTube won't overrule it.

### How long does a YouTube shadowban last?

There's no set length because there's no single shadowban. Strikes expire after a period YouTube sets, a channel's hidden users list lasts until that channel removes you, and spam filtering eases once you stop the behavior that triggered it.
