Add a photo or pick a background color, type your text, choose a style and download a finished image sized for Instagram, Stories, TikTok or X. Nothing is uploaded.

This page has a text-on-image maker that runs in the browser; use the HTML page to run it. The text below is the guide that goes with it.

## How to add text to an image
This add text to image tool works in a few taps: drop your photo into the box (or skip it and use a solid color), type your words in the **Text** box, choose a style, font, size and position, then press the download button. The preview redraws as you type, and the finished file is a PNG or JPG at full resolution, ready to post.

1. **Add a photo, or don't.** Tap **Add a photo or drop it here (optional)**. Without a photo, choose a **Background color** from the swatches or the color picker.
2. **Type your text.** Line breaks you type are kept, and long lines wrap on their own.
3. **Pick a style.** **Plain**, **Band**, **Outline** or **Breaking news** (more on each below).
4. **Set the type.** Choose **Font** (Sans, Serif or Rounded), tick or untick **Bold**, and move the **Font size** slider.
5. **Place it.** Choose **Alignment** (Left, Center, Right) and **Position** (Top, Middle, Bottom).
6. **Choose the output.** Pick an **Output size** and a **Format** (PNG or JPG), then press **Download**. The button shows the exact size, for example **Download 1080×1920 PNG**.

### Everything happens in your browser
Your photo is never uploaded. The image is drawn on your device, there's no account and no watermark. Fonts come from your device too, so nothing is downloaded; the exact letter shapes vary a little between iPhone, Android and Windows, and on devices without a rounded font, Rounded falls back to the regular sans.

## Add text to image styles: plain, band and outline
### Plain
Text in any color you pick with **Text color**, with an optional soft **Shadow** that helps it stand out from a photo. Plain on a solid background is the classic quote image.

### Band
A semi-transparent strip runs across the full width behind your text. It's automatically dark behind light text and light behind dark text, so the words stay readable on any photo. This is the style for Reels and TikTok covers and for Stories announcements, where text has to work over a busy frame and be read in a second.

### Outline
Each letter gets a thick outline in black or white, whichever contrasts with your text color. White text with a black outline is the classic meme look, and it holds up over photos with both light and dark areas.

### Breaking news
A TV-style headline bar with a red label, a LIVE badge and a time stamp, made for jokes and memes. It has its own page: the [breaking news generator](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/breaking-news-generator).

## Text on photo or on a plain background
### Use your own photo
When you add a photo, the output size switches to **Original**, which keeps your photo's shape (very large photos are capped at 2,160 pixels on the long side). Pick a preset size instead and the photo fills the frame from the center, with the edges cropped. If the crop cuts off something important, crop the photo to the right shape before you add it, or keep Original. **Choose a different photo** swaps it, and **Use a solid color instead** removes it.

### Quote images on a solid color
Without a photo, pick one of eight swatches or any color with the picker. A short quote, centered, in Serif or Rounded at a large size on a calm color is one of the easiest posts to make look good.

### Long text and line breaks
Text wraps to fit the margins, breaking between words in English and between characters in Japanese, Chinese and Korean. If your text is too long for the frame at the size you chose, it shrinks until it fits and the tool tells you: "The text was made smaller so it fits." Font size runs from 24 to 220 and is measured against a 1080-pixel canvas, so a setting looks the same in proportion at every output size.

## Sizes for Instagram, Stories, TikTok and X
| Output size | Pixels | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Original | Your photo's own shape | Keeping a photo uncropped |
| 1:1 | 1080×1080 | Square feed posts, quote images |
| 4:5 | 1080×1350 | Portrait Instagram and Facebook feed posts |
| 9:16 · Stories/Reels | 1080×1920 | Stories, Reels and TikTok covers, TikTok photo posts |
| 16:9 | 1920×1080 | Landscape posts for X, LinkedIn and Facebook |

Choose PNG for text on a solid color, since it keeps edges crisp. Choose JPG for text on a photo when you want a smaller file. At the time of writing, Instagram's feed takes images between 4:5 and 1.91:1, so a 9:16 image belongs in Stories, a TikTok photo post or a Reel cover rather than a feed post. If your photo needs resizing first, the [Instagram photo resizer](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/instagram-photo-resizer) and [TikTok photo resizer](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/tiktok-photo-resizer) fit or crop it to the right shape.

## Ideas for text on photo posts
### Reels and TikTok covers
Use 9:16 with the **Band** style at **Top** or **Middle**, a short title of three to six words, and a large size. Profile grids crop covers, so keep the text in the middle of the frame rather than at the edges. Then pick the image as the cover where the app lets you choose one.

### Quote images and tips
Use 1:1 or 4:5 with **Plain** text on a solid color. One idea per image is easier to read than a paragraph. A series in the same color and font builds a recognizable look.

### Stories announcements
"Sale ends tonight", "New episode out now", "Doors open at 7": short lines in **Band** or **Outline** over a photo, at 9:16. Keep the text clear of the very top and bottom, where the account name and reply bar sit.

### Labels on screenshots and before-and-after shots
Put a word like "Before", "After" or "Day 30" on each photo, then combine them with the [photo collage maker](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/photo-collage-maker). If a screenshot shows names, faces or addresses, hide them with the [blur image](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/blur-image) tool first.

## Frequently asked questions
### How do I add text to an image for free?
Add a photo (or pick a background color), type your text, choose a style, font and position, and press download. The tool is free, needs no sign-up and adds no watermark.

### How do I put text on a photo so it's readable?
Use the **Band** style, which puts a translucent strip behind the words, or **Outline**, which gives each letter a contrasting edge. With **Plain**, keep **Shadow** on and pick a text color that contrasts with the photo.

### Can I add text to an image on my phone?
Yes. It works in the browser on iPhone and Android: tap the box to pick a photo from your library, type, and the download saves to your phone.

### Can I add text without a photo?
Yes. Skip the photo and choose a background color. That's the quickest way to make quote images and text slides.

### Can I write in Japanese or other languages?
Yes. You can type in any language, and Japanese, Chinese and Korean text wraps between characters, keeping punctuation like 。 off the start of a line. Text is horizontal only.

### Can I move the text anywhere I want?
You place it with **Alignment** (left, center, right) and **Position** (top, middle, bottom), which gives nine placements. Free dragging isn't supported.

### Is my photo uploaded?
No. The image is made in your browser and saved straight to your device.
