Bold your Discord display name, custom status, role or channel names with 9 Unicode bold styles, and learn when **markdown** is the better way to bold.

This page has a Unicode font generator that runs in the browser; use the HTML page to run it. The text below is the guide that goes with it.

## Bold styles you can generate

If you want bold words in a Discord message, you don't need this tool: wrap them in double asterisks. This generator is for everywhere else, such as names, statuses and server labels, where Discord shows asterisks literally. Type your text and tap one of 9 bold styles to copy it.

### The bold styles

- **Serif bold**: 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭
- **Sans bold**: 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, the closest match to Discord's interface font
- **Serif bold italic**: 𝑮𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝒏𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕
- **Sans bold italic**: 𝙂𝙖𝙢𝙚 𝙣𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩
- **Bold script**: 𝓖𝓪𝓶𝓮 𝓷𝓲𝓰𝓱𝓽
- **Bold gothic**: 𝕲𝖆𝖒𝖊 𝖓𝖎𝖌𝖍𝖙
- **Double-struck**: 𝔾𝕒𝕞𝕖 𝕟𝕚𝕘𝕙𝕥
- **Black bubble**: 🅖🅐🅜🅔
- **Black squared**: 🅶🅰🅼🅴

For script, bubble, small caps and 20-plus other styles, use the [Discord font generator](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/discord-font-generator).

### Why it pastes as bold

Each style is a different set of Unicode characters that happen to look heavy. They're plain text as far as Discord is concerned, which is why they show up bold in fields that ignore formatting.

## Markdown bold vs. Unicode bold

### Discord's markdown, quickly

| You type | You get |
|---|---|
| `**text**` | bold |
| `*text*` | italic |
| `***text***` | bold italic |
| `__**text**__` | bold underline |
| `~~text~~` | strikethrough |

Markdown works in messages, replies, threads and forum posts, and in embed descriptions sent by bots. The full list is in Discord's [markdown help article](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/210298617).

### When markdown is the right choice

For anything inside a message, markdown is better. It's real formatting, so it's searchable in Discord's message search, readable by screen readers, and quick to type.

### When you need Unicode bold

Markdown isn't rendered in your display name, server nickname, custom status, server name, role names, category names or channel names. Unicode bold is the only way to get heavy letters in those places. Usernames won't accept it at all, because they only allow lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods.

### If your markdown bold isn't working

Check that there's no space right after the opening asterisks or before the closing ones, and that the text isn't inside a code block. To show asterisks literally, put a backslash before them.

## Where bold text helps on Discord

### Role names

Bold role names like "𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿" or "𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝘁" stand out in the member list and in role pickers.

### Category headers

Categories group your channels in the sidebar. A bold category name such as "𝐕𝐎𝐈𝐂𝐄" makes the structure easier to see at a glance.

### Display name and custom status

Display names can be 32 characters and statuses 128. A bold word in your status, like "𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝟴," is easy to notice when someone opens your profile. Check lengths with the [Discord character counter](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/discord-character-counter).

## Best practices

### Keep names mentionable

A fully bold display name is hard for others to type, so they can't easily @mention you. Many servers require readable nicknames, and some moderators will reset ones they can't search for.

### Don't bold whole channel names

Members navigate by channel names, and screen readers may announce styled letters as math symbols. Bold a category header, and keep the channels themselves readable.

### Respect bots and filters

Bots see the underlying characters, not the letters they imitate. Commands typed in Unicode bold won't run, and moderation filters may treat styled names as suspicious.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I type bold on Discord?

In a message, put two asterisks on each side of the text: `**like this**`. On desktop you can also highlight text and choose bold from the pop-up formatting bar. For names and statuses, copy a style from this generator.

### Can I make my Discord name bold?

Yes, by pasting Unicode bold characters into your display name or server nickname. You can't use them in your username.

### Is Unicode bold allowed on Discord?

Using these characters isn't against Discord's rules by itself. Individual servers may have rules about readable nicknames, so check before you change yours.

### Why does my bold name look different on mobile?

Discord uses your device's fonts to draw Unicode characters. Different phones draw them slightly differently, and older ones may not support every style.

### Is this generator free?

Yes. It's free, needs no account and runs in your browser, so nothing you type leaves your device.
