Resize any photo to Instagram's feed, story and profile sizes without awkward auto-crops. Pick a preset, choose crop or fit, and download.

This page has an image resizer that runs in the browser; use the HTML page to run it. The text below is the guide that goes with it.

## Instagram image sizes at a glance
For the Instagram feed, use 1080×1080 for square, 1080×1350 for portrait and 1080×566 for landscape. Stories and Reels use 1080×1920, and profile photos should be uploaded at 320×320. The resizer has a preset for each.

| Preset | Size | Ratio | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Square | 1080×1080 | 1:1 | Product shots, quotes, carousels |
| Portrait | 1080×1350 | 4:5 | People, food, anything you want to fill the screen |
| Landscape | 1080×566 | 1.91:1 | Wide scenery, group photos |
| Story / Reel | 1080×1920 | 9:16 | Stories, Reel covers, full-screen images |
| Profile photo | 320×320 | 1:1 | Your account picture, shown as a circle |

### Why 1080 pixels wide
Instagram displays feed images at a width of 1080 pixels. Uploading smaller means the app has to stretch your photo; uploading much larger means it compresses harder. Exporting at 1080 wide gives Instagram exactly what it expects.

### Portrait takes up the most space
A 4:5 portrait image fills more of the phone screen in the feed than a square or landscape one. If you aren't sure which shape to pick for a single image, portrait is usually the safe choice.

### Profile photos display tiny
Your profile photo shows at about 110×110 and as a circle. Uploading at 320×320 gives Instagram a sharper source to scale down from.

## How to resize a photo for Instagram
### 1. Upload the photo
Choose a PNG or JPG from your phone or computer. Nothing is uploaded to a server; the resizing happens in your browser.

### 2. Pick the preset
Select square, portrait, landscape, story/reel or profile photo. The preview updates to the new shape.

### 3. Decide between fill and fit
**Fill (crop)** fills the frame edge to edge and trims what doesn't fit, which suits most photos. **Fit (add background)** keeps the whole picture and adds bars in a color you pick. Fit is useful when you want a landscape photo inside a story without losing either side.

### 4. Download and post
Save as JPG for photos or PNG for graphics with text. Then upload it to Instagram, or to your scheduler.

## Tips for sharp Instagram photos
### Keep one format per carousel
Every slide in a carousel takes the shape of the first one. Resize all slides with the same preset before uploading so nothing is cropped unexpectedly.

### Keep text away from story edges
In Stories and Reels, your username sits at the top and the reply bar and captions sit at the bottom. Keep words and faces in the middle band of the 1080×1920 frame. Our [Reel size guide](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/reel-size-instagram) covers this in more detail.

### Check the profile grid crop
Your profile grid shows a cropped preview of each post rather than the full image. Center your subject so it still reads well in the grid thumbnail.

### Fix blurry uploads at the source
Blurry stories are often caused by low-resolution originals or poor connections during upload, not by the resize itself. See [why Instagram stories look blurry](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/why-does-my-instagram-story-look-blurry) for other causes and fixes.

## Use cases
### Batch-preparing a week of posts
Resize a set of product photos to portrait so your grid looks consistent, then schedule them in one go.

### Turning feed posts into stories
Take a square post, use fit with a brand-color background, and export at 1080×1920 to share it as a story without an awkward zoom.

### Updating a profile picture
Crop a headshot or logo to 320×320 so it stays sharp in the small circle on your profile. If you need a caption to go with your next post, the [Instagram line break generator](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/instagram-line-break-generator) keeps your spacing intact.

## Frequently asked questions
### What is the best photo size for Instagram?
For most feed posts, 1080×1350 (4:5 portrait) gives the most screen space. Square 1080×1080 and landscape 1080×566 are also supported.

### What size should an Instagram story be?
Use 1080×1920, a 9:16 vertical image. Keep text away from the very top and bottom where Instagram places its own controls.

### What size is an Instagram profile picture?
It displays at about 110×110 as a circle. Upload a square image at 320×320 for a crisp result.

### Why does Instagram crop my photo?
Instagram only accepts certain shapes and trims anything outside them. Resizing to a supported ratio first means you control the crop instead of the app.

### Should I export as PNG or JPG for Instagram?
JPG is fine for photographs and keeps file sizes small. PNG is better for graphics with sharp text or flat colors.

### Does this resizer upload my photos?
No. Everything is processed in your browser, so your photos stay on your device.
