Cross out or underline text with five Unicode styles and paste it into Instagram, X, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok and other apps that have no strikethrough button.

This page has a Unicode font generator that runs in the browser; use the HTML page to run it. The text below is the guide that goes with it.

## Line styles you can generate

Type your text and this generator adds a line through or under every character. Tap a result to copy it, then paste it into any app that shows plain text. It works where there's no strikethrough option, such as Instagram captions, X posts and LinkedIn updates.

### The five styles

| Style | Example | Unicode mark used |
|---|---|---|
| Strikethrough | S̶p̶r̶i̶n̶g̶ S̶a̶l̶e̶ | Long stroke overlay (U+0336) |
| Short strikethrough | S̵p̵r̵i̵n̵g̵ S̵a̵l̵e̵ | Short stroke overlay (U+0335) |
| Slash-through | S̸p̸r̸i̸n̸g̸ S̸a̸l̸e̸ | Long solidus overlay (U+0338) |
| Underline | S̲p̲r̲i̲n̲g̲ S̲a̲l̲e̲ | Low line (U+0332) |
| Double underline | S̳p̳r̳i̳n̳g̳ S̳a̳l̳e̳ | Double low line (U+0333) |

### How combining marks work

Unlike bold or cursive styles, these don't replace your letters. They keep each normal letter and add a zero-width "combining" character right after it, which the device draws on top of or under the letter. That has two side effects: the underlying words are still plain letters, and every character you type becomes two.

## Where strikethrough text works

### Platforms that need the Unicode version

Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, Threads, Bluesky and Pinterest have no strikethrough formatting in posts or bios, so a copied Unicode strike is the only way to show it. It pastes into captions, comments and bios on all of them.

### Platforms with built-in strikethrough

Some apps already support it, and their version is better because it's real formatting:

- **Discord**: `~~text~~` (see the [Discord font generator](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/discord-font-generator) for when Unicode helps)
- **Telegram**: the formatting menu, or `~~text~~` in many clients
- **YouTube comments**: `-text-`
- **Reddit**: `~~text~~`
- **Slack and WhatsApp**: `~text~`

Use the built-in option in those apps and save the Unicode version for names or fields where formatting isn't rendered.

### Places it won't work

Usernames, hashtags, @mentions, links and search fields need plain characters. A struck-through hashtag won't link anywhere.

## Best practices

### Mind the character count

Because each letter carries a hidden mark, crossing out 20 characters uses about 40. On X, with a 280-character limit, that adds up quickly. Paste your draft into the [X character counter](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/x-character-counter) before posting.

### Don't rely on the line to carry meaning

Screen readers usually ignore the combining marks and read the letters normally, so "$̶4̶0̶ $25" may be heard as "40 dollars, 25 dollars." Add a plain word to make it clear: "Was $̶4̶0̶, now $25."

### Expect small rendering differences

Some fonts draw the line slightly too high, too low or with gaps between letters. Short strikethrough and slash styles tend to look neater in apps where the long stroke overlaps awkwardly. Check on your phone before publishing.

### Strike whole words, not single letters

A line through one letter often looks like a rendering glitch. Strike complete words or phrases so the intent is obvious.

## Use cases

### Price drops and sales

A caption reading "$̶4̶0̶ $25 this weekend" shows the discount at a glance. Pair it with a plain-text description of the offer so it still makes sense if the line doesn't render.

### Jokes and self-corrections

Crossing out the honest word and following it with the polite one is a classic social media joke: "I n̶e̶e̶d̶ want this."

### Checklists and updates

Strike items you've finished in a pinned post or a bio list ("D̶r̶a̶f̶t̶ Published"), or cross out sold-out sizes in a product caption.

### Underlined emphasis

Underline and double underline are useful for a single word you want to stand out without switching to bold, such as a deadline.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I cross out text on Instagram?

Instagram has no strikethrough option. Type your text here, copy the strikethrough style, and paste it into your caption, bio or comment.

### Why does my strikethrough look broken?

The app or device font doesn't position the combining mark well, so the line may have gaps or sit off-center. Try the short strikethrough or slash style, which often render more cleanly.

### Does strikethrough text count as extra characters?

Yes. Each letter is followed by a combining mark, so the text takes roughly twice as many characters. Leave room when you're close to a platform's limit.

### Can I remove the strikethrough after pasting?

Not with a formatting button. Delete the text and paste or type a plain version instead.

### Is this strikethrough text generator free?

Yes. It runs in your browser, needs no sign-up, and doesn't upload anything you type.
