Check a YouTube handle against the platform's rules, get close valid alternatives, and open youtube.com/@name to see whether a channel already uses it.

This page has a handle checker that runs in the browser; use the HTML page to run it. The text below is the guide that goes with it.

## What this YouTube name checker does
The YouTube name checker tests your @handle against YouTube's format rules and gives you a one-tap link to youtube.com/@yourname, so you can see whether a channel already has it. It can't promise the handle is free: YouTube has no public availability lookup, and handles can be held by channels you can't see. The final answer comes from YouTube Studio, where YouTube tells you straight away whether a handle is available.

### The rules it tests
- 3 to 30 characters
- Letters (including non-Latin scripts), numbers, underscores, hyphens, periods and the middle dot (·)
- No spaces
If a rule fails, the checker says which one, then suggests close variations that pass every rule. A handle made only of numbers or symbols also gets a tip to add at least one letter, so people can find and remember it.

### Check a list of handles
Switch to **Check a list** to paste up to 200 handles, one per line or separated by commas. The checker marks each one as valid or says what's wrong, links the valid ones to their channel URL, and lets you copy just the valid handles. It's a quick way to narrow a brainstorm down to names worth opening.

### Reading the channel link
The button opens youtube.com/@ followed by your handle in a new tab. If a channel loads, the handle is taken. If YouTube says the page isn't available, the handle may be free, or it may belong to a channel that's been terminated, hidden or recently renamed. Treat it as "worth trying," not "yours."

## YouTube handle vs. channel name
YouTube gives every channel two names, and people looking for a YouTube channel name checker usually mean the handle. Only one of the two has to be unique.

### Your handle is unique
Your handle is the @name in your channel URL (youtube.com/@yourname). It's what people use to mention you in comments, descriptions and Shorts, and no two channels can share one. This is the name the checker tests, and it's the one you have to claim.

### Your channel name is not
Your channel name is the display name shown on your channel page and next to your videos. It can include spaces and capital letters, and many channels can use the same one, so there's no YouTube channel name availability to check: if you want "Weeknight Dinners," you can have it. At the time of writing, YouTube allows channel names of up to 50 characters.

### Make them match where you can
A channel called "Weeknight Dinners" with the handle @weeknightdinners is easy to find and easy to say. If the exact handle is taken, add a short, meaningful modifier ("@weeknightdinnershq," "@weeknightdinners.tv") rather than random numbers.

## How to check YouTube channel name availability
### 1. Type the handle you want
Enter it without the @. If you'd normally separate words with a space, try a period, an underscore or a hyphen instead.

### 2. Fix anything that's flagged
Most failures come from length (under 3 or over 30 characters), a space, or a character YouTube doesn't accept, such as an apostrophe, ampersand or emoji. The checker tells you which.

### 3. Open the channel link
If a channel loads at youtube.com/@yourname, try one of the suggested variations. If nothing loads, the handle is worth trying in YouTube.

### 4. Claim it in YouTube Studio
Try the handle in YouTube itself, as described in the next section. YouTube checks availability as you type and won't let you save a handle that's taken or reserved.

## How to change your YouTube handle
At the time of writing, you change your handle in YouTube Studio: open **Customization**, then **Basic info**, and edit the **Handle** field. In the YouTube mobile app, the same field is under your channel's edit option (the pencil icon). YouTube shows whether the new handle is available before you publish the change. Menus move from time to time, so check YouTube's help if the field isn't where you expect.

### Things to know before you change it
- YouTube limits how often you can change your handle, so pick one you're happy to keep.
- Links that use your old @ URL may stop reaching your channel, and someone else may be able to claim the old handle later, so update links in your video descriptions, bio and other profiles.
- Changing your handle doesn't change your channel name, and changing your channel name doesn't change your handle. They're edited separately.

## Frequently asked questions
### Can this YouTube name checker tell me if a handle is available?
Not definitively. It checks the format and opens the channel URL, but YouTube doesn't provide a public availability check. Trying the handle in YouTube Studio is the only reliable test.

### Is there a YouTube channel name checker for display names?
You don't need one for availability. Channel names don't have to be unique, so any channel name within YouTube's limits is yours to use. Only the @handle has to be unique.

### How long can a YouTube handle be?
Between 3 and 30 characters, using letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens, periods and middle dots.

### Why does YouTube say a handle is taken when no channel shows up?
The handle may belong to a channel that's terminated, hidden or recently renamed, or YouTube may have reserved it. Those handles can stay unavailable even though no channel loads.

### Can I use the same handle on YouTube and other platforms?
Often, yes, but YouTube's rules are looser than most. A handle with a hyphen or a period works on YouTube but not on X or Twitch. Test one name on nine platforms at once with the [username availability checker](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/username-checker).

### Where can I get ideas for a YouTube handle?
The [YouTube name generator](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/youtube-name-generator) gives you 30 channel name ideas from your topic; paste the best ones into the list mode above to check them in one go. Once the handle is set, the [YouTube bio generator](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/youtube-bio-generator) helps with the About section.

### Does the checker store the handles I test?
No. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing is uploaded or saved.
