## YouTube at a glance

| What | Detail |
| --- | --- |
| Title | Up to 100 characters |
| Description | Up to 5,000 characters |
| Media | One video per post (YouTube decides whether it’s a Short) |
| Privacy | Public, unlisted or private |

## What you can schedule on YouTube
Every YouTube post in Schedule For You is a video upload. Here's what you control.

### The video
A video is required. Attach your finished file and it's uploaded to your channel as a normal YouTube video.

### Title
Use the title field, or leave it empty and the first line of your caption becomes the title. YouTube titles can be up to 100 characters, and the composer checks the length. Run a draft through the free [YouTube title checker](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/youtube-title-checker) if you want a second opinion on clarity.

### Description
The rest of your caption becomes the description, up to 5,000 characters. That's room for a summary, chapters you've written out, links and credits.

### Privacy
Choose public, unlisted or private for each upload. Unlisted is handy for client reviews or videos you only want to share by link.

### What about Shorts?
Schedule For You uploads a normal video, and YouTube decides whether it counts as a Short. Vertical or square videos within YouTube's Shorts length, up to 3 minutes at the time of writing, are generally treated as Shorts. Our guide on [how to post YouTube Shorts](https://scheduleforyou.com/blog/post-youtube-shorts) explains the details.

## How it works
1. **Connect YouTube.** Open the Accounts screen, choose YouTube and sign in with the Google account that owns or manages your channel.
2. **Write the post.** Attach your video, then write the caption. If the same clip is also going to TikTok or Instagram, select those accounts.
3. **Tailor the YouTube version.** Add a searchable title, a fuller description with links and choose the privacy setting. Your TikTok and Instagram captions stay unchanged.
4. **Pick a time or add it to the queue.** Pick an exact upload time, or add the video to your queue.

## Features that help on YouTube
### One calendar for long and short videos
See your YouTube uploads next to the short clips and posts that promote them. That makes it easier to line up a teaser on Instagram the day before a long video goes live.

### Signatures for standard links
Add your usual description footer, such as links to your site, newsletter or gear list, as a signature that's appended automatically.

### Media library
Keep your rendered videos in one place so you can reuse a clip across TikTok, Reels and YouTube without uploading it three times.

### Approvals for client channels
Agencies and editors can send a client preview link so the channel owner approves the title and description before the video publishes.

## Tips for YouTube uploads
- **Front-load the title.** Put the main keyword and the reason to click early, since longer titles get cut off in many places.
- **Write the first two lines of the description for people.** They show before "more", so summarize the video rather than starting with links.
- **Upload in good time.** Large files take a while. Scheduling well ahead gives you room to fix anything before the publish time.
- **Use tags lightly.** YouTube says tags play a minimal role in discovery. The [YouTube tag generator](https://scheduleforyou.com/tools/youtube-tag-generator) helps with common misspellings, but your title and thumbnail matter more.

## Frequently asked questions
### Can I schedule YouTube Shorts?
You can schedule vertical or square videos, and YouTube decides whether each one counts as a Short. There's no separate Shorts setting in Schedule For You, because YouTube makes that call.

### Do I need a video to post to YouTube?
Yes. YouTube posts in Schedule For You always need a video. Text and image posts aren't published to YouTube.

### Where does the video title come from?
From the title field if you fill it in, or from the first line of your caption if you don't. Titles can be up to 100 characters.

### Can I upload a video as unlisted or private?
Yes. Choose public, unlisted or private for each upload.

### Can I post the same video to TikTok and Instagram?
Yes. Attach it once, select the accounts and tailor each version. On Instagram, a single video is published as a Reel.

### What if my YouTube upload fails?
You get a failed-post alert. If Google revoked access, for example after a password change, reconnect YouTube from the Accounts screen and retry.
